Delta charging for curbside check in

Southwest has been charging $2 per bag for quite some time now out of Pittsburgh when you curb side check. And this is with on-line check in. I wonder if they will start charging $3 now so they can keep up with the Jones'

Southwest is now charging? Are you sure you don't mean USAirways?

I don't think that will work. The computer probably won't let them check in "extra" luggage without collecting the fees. And the airlines have gotten onto skycaps about overweight etc....

According to the article if you do online check in you will not be charged:

The fee will be waived for Delta's most prized customers: elite Medallion-level fliers, first-class and business-class travelers. Passengers who check in online also won't be charged.

On a related note, the first inkling of the new second bag fee is on Delta's website - but only in the list of fees waived for Medallion customers. The regular baggage allowance page is still showing 2 free bags.

I'm not sure you use the skycap. There may be a Delta employee by a luggage drop area that prints, and affixes the tags to the bags.

The airlines are charged for every bag that's checked curbside. Airlines are no longer absorbing those fees. It's possible there is some loophole in the contract so the airline doesn't have to pay if the initial checkin is done online.

It's also possible the reason those passengers don't pay the fee is because passengers who already "pre-checked" their luggage may not be eligible to even use a skycap.

I wonder what will happen to the RAC when the airlines contracts come up for renewal. It was posted that the airlines pay the same fee they pay for curbside checkin. Since the airlines are no longer absorbing those fees I can't see them paying that fee for baggage checked at Disney.

At Philadelphia International they've been charging you $2 per bag for curbside check in since last year for every airline. I don't mind the charge because it's easier when you are traveling with kids to check in at the curb.

I just hope they don't keep upping the price.

UA has seperate bag drop computers in many airports. Check in online, then go to Mr Chicken and drop your bags. No human interaction

I have never paid a penny to check a Southwest Bag - perhaps it's unique to your airport.

I am a frequent traveler for business....tip the Skycaps and I can't remember the last time I have even had my bag WEIGHED!

You can no longer count on a tipped skycap letting on overweight bag slide. Airlines are checking up on them. Skycaps are pretty good at estimating weight. My guess is your bags aren't close enough to worry the skycap. Some airports SW has the skycap write the weight on a baggage tag. Skycap has issues if he lets too many bags slide.

Some airports use an outside service to handle skycaps. The service charges airlines for every bag checked that charge covers the cost of setting up the computers. Many airlines are no longer absorbing those charges but instead are charging the passengers.

of course you can never depend on it......I don't and I didn't suggest anyone count on the kindness of a Skycap. I guess I am just lucky that way. Anyway.... The airlines are becoming very strict about the weight onboard....especially in a World of $100 a barrel oil. All I said was I have never been charged - ever - to actually check bags with a Skycap and I fly Southwest all over for work....then merrily down to Orlando for fun.

Varies, but usually inside the terminal. But they still need to be handed over to a human so don't expect to get away with overweight bags.

I rarely ever use a skycap, but the one time I used a DL skycap I was charged overweight fees - I was about 2lbs over due to an unexpected emergency extension of travel for work.
