Countdown Practice Successful
Having completed a smooth countdown practice, the seven astronauts of mission STS-122 will spend the next couple of weeks puttin ghte finishing touches on their training and finalizing checklists for a launch targeted for Dec. 6. They are to carry the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory into orbit aboard space shuttle Atlantis and install the module on the International Space Station.
Several important steps remain for NASA before the countdown begins, including an in-depth review of Atlantis and its cargo. That analysis is called a Flight Readiness Review and is sheduled to take place Nov. 30. Senior NASA managers will set a formal launch date at the end of the meeting if they deem STS-122 ready to fly.
What is the flight readiness review?
About two weeks prior to each space shuttle launch, the Shuttle Mission Management Team convenes at Kennedy Space Center for a thorough review of the next mission. Also in attendance are other top-level NASA officials, Space Shuttle Program managers, engineers and contractors. The group conducts a comprehensive evaluation of all activities and elements necessary for the safe and successful performance of shuttle mission operations -- from the prelaunch phase through post-landing. They examine the readiness of the space shuttle, flight crew and payloads to determine if everything is set to proceed with launch.
At the conclusion of the review, the chairman of the Mission Management Team conducts a poll of the team members. If there are no issues, the members sign a "Certification of Flight Readiness" to verify they have successfully completed flight preparation processes to date. At that time, an official launch date is set and the process continues toward liftoff.
