OK so well my family booked our june trip awhile back. I wasnt home when we booked it online. I had given my parents the money for my portion as they booked. We had agreed on the Hojo and from my knowledge thats where we were staying. Except last night I looked at our vouchers and it says we are staying at the Tropicana and when I questioned it, my parents laughed and said they thought they told me. I am a bit shocked and although it is exciting as it is directly across the street from the park, and closer then Hojo I remember on here some people talking about bugs etc. I cant remember if the Tropicana had bug problem or if you really enjoyed the stay there.

What were the pro's and cons that you found while staying there? Are there things that you would recommend I try, like staying on a certain floor etc. I just havent heard too much on this place.

Was it noisy like paper thin walls, really hard beds, good service or bad service etc.

Gosh, I hope it's a good place, cause that's where I'll be for my trip!

We are also booked at the Tropicana Inn, we will be staying there in May. We stayed there in 2005 and didn't have any problems with the hotel. The closeness to the park is the best perk and our room was very clean. The only complaints we have heard was over the free continental breakfast that’s offered. It didn't effect us at all and used it as a place to grab a quick bite before we hit the parks. We also checked out Trip advisor and the hotel gets good reviews on there. As for room location, we always request a ground level room because we have smaller children and much easier to manage then having a bunch of stairs to contend with.

Have a great trip !!!!!

I have not heard about bugs here, only Fairfield and that is one of the reasons we chose to stay at the Tropicana for our May trip. We will have to see how it goes.

OH RIGHT! ok yeah ok I know the Fairfield was mentioned so that takes my mind off the bug situation. Either way I am sure it will be a great place to stay. Let us know how your stay there was so we know what to expect.

Well I have stayed at both the Tropicana and the Hojo and prefer the Tropicana. Here is why (and this is based on my experience just my opinion):

Tropicana room was cleaner, newer and the bathroom was much newer. Don't get me wrong, the Hojo was fine, but we had a couple of no biggie issues, food left in frig, mold in the shower that was never taken care of (lucky I had my chlorox wipes).

Tropicana staff was more attentive. They just went out of their way several times for us. Also liked it that every time I was out and about I saw people washing windows, sweeping the parking lot, pruning the trees etc. They just seemed to really make the effort. Also, they were all very friendly. Hojo staff was great too, just didn't notice them doing the spit and polish as much.

Closer, closer, closer! This is the part where I usually get yelled at, but to me the Hojo walk is a bit far. We take midday breaks and it just got sort of old. And I know its the same distance as the DLH and that never bothers me but whatever. Being right across the street is just the best.

Free breakfast. Its not gourmet, not even close but its free and every bit of money you save is more money to drop in the parks. No free breakfast at all at the Hojo.

The one place where the Hojo does outshine the Tropicana is the pool area. It has two pools, plus a kiddie pool and spray jet area. Howevever, the Tropicana pool area is nice (but small) and has a huge hot tub. It doesn't have the nice grounds of the Hojo but does have some pretty landscaping touches.

Also at the Tropicana you don't have the worry of getting a freeway room. Some of the rooms at the Hojo are about 20 feel literally from the I-5. Way too noisy. The tropicana does have some rooms nearer to Harbor, but not the highway.

Frankly, since I discovered the Tropicana I will probably never return to the Hojo. Because if I did every time I passed the Tropicana I would be peeved at myself for not booking there! The only reason I am not staying there in June is because the mini suite at the BWPPI was too good to pass up and I want to try a new place just for the heck of it. And its only two nights so I don't feel like I need as much of a safe bet. Any longer and I'd be at the Tropicana because I know I would love it. The Tropicana is a motel, its not fancy but its super clean, and location cannot be beat.

Hope that makes you feel a bit better. Also, check out Tripadvisor, there have been some very nice reviews of the Tropicana lately. Its been newly remodeled in the last couple of years or so and the reviews show that. There have also been some very good reviews of the Tropicana here on the dis, including the one I posted in February of last year.

Oh yeah, forgot to add it was very quiet, the beds were comfy and had really nice linens and blankets for a motel. They were all clean, I noticed these big bins of clean bedspreads and blankets in the housekeeping laundry room (door was open). I asked for an extra blanket one night and when the guy brought it to me, it was warm and clean smelling from the dryer. I have this sort of thing about hotel bedding (too many Dateline episodes I guess).

KUDOS KUDOS KUDOS TO YOU! Thanks soooooo much for that review. WOW is all I have to say. Thanks to all of you who posted. All the help is very much appreciated.

You're welcome! I was so pleasantly surprised with this place and I hope you will be too! I haven't see one bad review of the place since we stayed there so thats a pretty good sign. Have a fun trip!

Thanks! You have a fantastic time when you go too! :) So exciting... its creeping up on us :goodvibes

I'll be staying at the Tropicana for the first time on May 1.

Can you leave your car there for the day after you check out, or would we need to move it to Disneyland parking?

hmmm thats a good question. I wish I could help you out there. It might be an idea to check with the hotel just in case to be 100% sure. They might be good with your accomodations :confused3

We stayed at the Tropicana in 2002 and really enjoyed it. Like others have said it was very clean, staff was very polite. The breakfast was fine. I have had fancier free breakfasts but the rooms were a lot more expensive.
When we went in 2005 the travel agent said the Trpoicana wasnt one of the hotels included in the great deal we were getting.... So we stayed next door at the Carousel. Not nearly as nice. Next time its the Tropicana for sure.

Thanks for the review Amy& Dan. My DD wants to try the Tropicana next year. (stayed @ Camelot in 05,very nice, and the Castle Inn last Sept, alright, but stay away from the rooms right up front, traffic noise.)

You're welcome! I am glad to help, when we stayed there I hadn't ever seen a lot about it and was worried so its nice that now I can post my experience for other's with upcoming trips. The Tropicana is owned and managed by the same people who run the Camelot. But I like the Tropicana more, the rooms felt a bit lighter and brighter and it has some nice landscaping touches that the Camelot doesn't have due to its set up. I think you'll enjoy your stay at the Tropicana!

And to JohnZ46: I would call the Tropicana directly. They don't have a huge parking lot so I would imagine they may let you park there that day but maybe only until a certain time, before the check ins arrive.

Thanks for the reply. To me landscaping means, squat. Now the veiw of the fireworks from the pool was 2 kuul. A cold one,a smoke, what more could a man ask for? (sceaming kids don't count):rolleyes1

The nights we didn't stay in the park for fireworks, we sat out in the hot tub or swam and watched the fireworks from there enjoying a cold one, soaking our tired feet. It doesn’t get any better then that :thumbsup2

Amy&Dan,

I am also one that looks at the landscaping at the hotel, to me it kind of reflects the whole picture. I like the fact that the hotel cares enough to keep the grounds up and provide a nice setting for you.
You commented on the staff and I would agree. They were awesome during our stay in 2005. Very friendly, always willing to answer questions, and took care of the small details we had. Just a great place to stay !!!! :thumbsup2

Mystic, just in case you haven't received enough positive replies, I wanted to let you know that the Tropicana is highly rated by many of the posters over at Mouseplanet. I have only heard good things! :thumbsup2

Oh yes, that view of the fireworks from the Camelot is incredible. I remember one night in November of 2004, we bundled up out there in blankets (it was so cold) and watched them. And had our cold ones!

You're right crasher11,landscaping does add to the experience, but not that high on my priority. (As long as it's not dead grass or just dirt). Some friends stayed at the Alpine Inn,nice landscaping out front, but I think 2 palm trees in the parking lot. Big whoop.
Of course after a few hours of "Parking lot,The Ride" (aka I-5),we just took in the pool, with a sixer.:rolleyes1

(btw,that was supposed to be,'screaming' kids)
