Need Info on Rec'g Points Transfer

We are going to need to get additional points for a trip in October 2007. We currently own at BWV with a June use year. It seems that doing a point transfer from another member would be the easiest and least risky way to go. We will probably need 80-100 points. I see that members can now only do one transfer in/out per year.

We've never done this before and I have lots of questions.
Does use year matter on the transferred points - does it have to match ours?
Do we have to get the points from someone with the same home resort?
What happens if we receive the transferred points and then cannot use them? Can they be banked?
Do the points become our points once transferred (and owner can't get them back)?
Are there any other rules regarding use of transferred points?
Other than on the DIS, are there other ways to find reputable people who want to transfer/rent points?
How do you handle the money part of the transaction (I see people mention paypal. If we just transfer the money to the other person's paypal account,do we have protection?)
Any tips to avoid scammers/fraud?

Thanks for any suggestions or help!

Transferred points are supposed to maintain their original Use Year and resort. Currently rhey do not, and will take on the Use Year and Home Resort of the account they are transferred into, this may be corrected at anytime.

Do we have to get the points from someone with the same home resort?

If you want to take advantage of the 11 month Home Resort Booking Advantage then yes. But see my first answer above.

What happens if we receive the transferred points and then cannot use them? Can they be banked?

Yes, they can be banked, subject to normal banking guidelines, they can not be borrowed or transferred again. BTW, Holding points can be transferred, but they retain their Holding Status.

Do the points become our points once transferred (and owner can't get them back)?

Yes, transferring is a final & permanent action. It can not be undone.

Are there any other rules regarding use of transferred points?

Yes, you may not receive any compensation for transferring points. This is frequently violated, but it is against the rules.

Other than on the DIS, are there other ways to find reputable people who want to transfer/rent points?

Yes, other websites that may not be mentioned here.

How do you handle the money part of the transaction (I see people mention paypal. If we just transfer the money to the other person's paypal account,do we have protection?)

Most people who transfer their points, require payment in full before the transaction, as once the transfer occurs, their points become yours and they have no recourse. They can't even go to Disney, because receiving compensation for a point transfer is prohibited.

You have PayPal's normal protection. But many experienced DVCers, especially when transferring a big chunk of points, won't accept PayPal, because of the risk that you (the buyer) will claim unreceived goods, have the payment reversed and keep the Owner's points.

Any tips to avoid scammers/fraud?

Trust your instincts. Read the posts of the person you want to transfer from. Be very careful, newbies often tell you they have points to transfer, and after you pay them, they try and transfer them, only to find out they have already used their one transfer up, or they have banked or borrowed points. USE THE FORCE, LUKE!!!

Thanks for any suggestions or help!

Hope this helps,

-Tony

I have been a little confused on this matter also.
So, greenban, say I have Aug. UY at SSR. Can I get points from someone who owns at BWV and has a June UY? Do they become my SSR-Aug. UY?:confused3

No, the points you transfer retain their use year and resort. So BWV June UY stay BWV June UY. But you could use them at 7 months as SSR points.

Are you saying that you are still receiving transfers and those points are still morphing - even after the changes at MS this past August?

So, let's say you transfered into your Oct UY SSR contract, 200 June UY BWV points. You could not use them to make a 11 month ressie at SSR, but could you do a 11 month ressie at BWV? Or are they 7 month only ressies period. If you wanted to bank those points you would have to follow the June deadlines not Oct deadlines.

Nope, that's not what I'm saying. No one who recently transferred has come forward (here at the DIS) and told us if the loophole is still open. I have not transferred any points in the last 6 months or so.

I do not believe they have yet fixed it, but I don't know for sure, yet.

So has anyone transferred in lately?

Hi Steph:

The answer has always been that transferred points are suppossed to maintain their home resort and use year.

Six months ago, the answer to your question would have been yes, the BWV points would have magically become SSR, August UY points.

To my knowledge this point morphing loophole was discovered when someone transferred points into their account to get 11 month booking privs. at a resort they didn't own. When they tried to book, they couldn't, and they had to have several calls with Supervisors to correct the situation (MANUALLY) so they could book based on the original Home Resort of the transferred points.

Some 'clever' renters followed up that incident, buy 'buying' (transferred in) distressed points from whatever resort to their BCV membership, and magically (without Pixie Dust!) they had 'cheap' BCV points that they rented at marked up prices.

Since, I haven't transferred lately, and don't expect to transfer again (I finally own enough points), I can't positively answer the status of the morphing software fix.

My contact at DVC Compliance, stated that was a high priority software fix, casual conversations with MS-Advisors, suggest it has not yet been fixed.

Anyone who personally recently transferred in care to comment?

If you transferred BWV points into your SSR account, you should be able to make an 11 month reservation at BWV with those points. However, there is to be NO compensation for transferred points. So that could be a problem, too.

O.K. Thanks! The reason I want to be sure to get this correct is that I helped a friend out who wanted to go to WDW. I booked it to get it taken care of for her, but I need to replace those points, so it doesn't mess up our plans to go in Aug.

Thanks to everyone for all the great info. This is so helpful.

If you are not supposed to be compensated for transferred points, how does everyone get around this...just not mention it?
