I am currently taking methotrexate once a week and lately it has been making me very sick. I went through this when I started the meds last year but we solved the problem by splitting the meds into two doses. The problems have started again even though i still split my meds into 2 doses.

So my doctor wants me to try and split it into 3 doses and if that does not work she is going to prescribe zofran.

Has anyone taken zofran before?
Did it help with the nausea?

As a RN, I know Zofran is a good med. It started out as being used with cancer patients and now is used fairly routinely for post op patients and others. On a personal note, a use it when I get my migraines and it works very well. No side effects. Good luck

Zofran is the only prescribed antinausea I can use. I've been using it for years. I have HORRIBLE side effects from phenergan and compazine. When I am having one of my severe flare ups(IBS) and I end up in the ER,the first thing I remind them of is that I can only have the Zofran. It helps immediately and there are no real heavy side effects.

My godson was on methotrexate, zofran and numerous other cancer drugs and the zohran worked very well!

I took it for severe morning sickness and it helped tremendously.

Good luck!

I had great success with Zofran. I developed an allegery to compazine.

Can I ask you what happens when you take Compazine? For the last couple of years, when I take phenergan or Compazine, I start twitching and shaking uncontrollably. I start feeling like I can't breathe and my mouth feels cottony. It happened in the ER and they acted like it was nothing...tho they did give me a shot of Benadryl with my Reglan, said that was in the same family as the Phenergan and Compazine. They told me it was just a side effect I was having, but I have taken those for years and it has only been in the last 2 years that those symptoms appeared when taking them.

A friend of mine recently had a baby. She had horrible morning sickness almost the whole pregnancy. Zofran helped her.

Zofran is a blessing, I had hyperemesis (severe, severe morning sickness) in my last pregnancy-- I lost 18lbs. It helped me keep food down! It was amazing. I made sure to get some for this pregnancy, but I haven't had to use a lot of it. Zofran gets my thumbs up! :thumbsup2

No advice, just sorry to read about all of you suffering with nausea. I hope you feel better soon OP.

I took Zofran for hyperemesis. It really was a godsend, however you have to be very careful about constipation. It can get very bad, very quickly. Make sure you take a stool softener (with doc's permission, of course) while you're taking it.

I never have any side effects from Zofran, however, when they give me Dilaudid as a pain med Zofran will not work. I don't know what it is but Dilaudid makes me want to projectile vomit and nothing helps it.

Same here.

My experience is the same. Compazine puts me into full blown seizures.

As for Zofran, it's my absolute favorite anti-nausea med. (That's sad...that I have a favorite.) It works so well.

Phenergan knocks me out if I take a dose high enough to stop the vomiting.

One old school ER doctor would give me Compazine injections when I'd go to the ER for vomiting/blockages with my Crohn's Disease. I didn't realize it was an allergic reaction until one time when my husband was in the room with me and saw what was happening.

They asked why I didn't tell them I was having an allergic reaction. I didn't realize I just thought I was so sick that I felt that way. My body felt extremely "fuzzy", and it felt like I had vomited so hard my body had turned inside out. The first couple times it just felt twitchy and fuzzy, then it got worse with subsequent injections.

My husband said my eyes rolled up into my head so you could just about only see the whites of them, and that I was twitching, then went into full blown posturing with the seizures.

They gave me Benadryl to counteract the Compazine, and it helped quickly.

Now when I go to the ER, I get Phenergan injections (as well as Dialuad for the pain), and get sent home with Phenergan or Zofran.

One doctor gave me anti-nausea medicine in a patch to wear behind my right ear. They worked well, but I would develop a welt under the patch due to skin irritation. When I took off the patch, it looked like ringworm.

I think zofran is the best too.

I have had reglan too but dont think its effective enough. Seems to wear off much too quickly.

I had compazine post radiation and it did nothing for me. I was sick the whole time.

Miracle drug!! It's wonderful - none of the drowsiness or weird side effects you can get with Phenergan or some of the other nausea medicines.

It's expensive though, even with insurance. The only side effect I've sometimes had is constipation if taken regularly (like others have mentioned) - although this is not an issue if you are only taking it every once in a while - and sometimes it gives me a bad headache. But I will take a headache over vomiting any day!!!

I agree with the others that Zofran is a great med. I also noticed that they give it in multiple dosages. When I came home from the hospital I had a pill that was 8mg. When I asked the doctor for more the new pills were 4mg. I only use it once in a while but it works great.

Methotrexate is the devil. I had a lot of High Dose Methotrexate to treat my bone cancer. Zofran absolutely saved my life when I was on chemo.

If you get mouth sores from the metho, PM me. They (besides me wweight/nausea) were my biggest battle on chemo and I know a thousand and one tricks to treat them.

ETA: I am allergic to compazine. I have seizures if I take even the smallest dose of compazine. Be careful of that drug!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad to hear that it works.

unfortunately my doctor just realized that I might not be able to take it. She has to talk to my cardiologist because it my interact with my anit- arrhythmia drug flecainide because they can both cause long QT syndomre so they have to compare doses and decide if its safe.
