Today myself and my sister and her friend who are on vacation at WDW took the first Yuletide Fantasy Tour of the season, and I have to say it was EXCELLENT. We had James and Lisa from the Disney Institue as our guides and they were awesome. We were part of a group of 40 that was split into two for much of the tour. It was hard for someone who loves photography as much as I did to not take pics of the behind the scenes stuff as it was not permitted.

If you would like a review here it is - if you think you might want to take it - and want to be surprised - don't scroll down!

We visted by motorcoach (a DCL bus today!) - World Showcase
we entered the park from the backstage area behind Germany, and spent a bit of time in Germany, Italy, America & Japan before departing from behind Morocco. It was cool to see WS empty as we were there before opening. They were busy washing the "streets".

After leaving EPCOT we headed to MGM where we again went in through a back entrance behind the area that was Millionaire and saw the construction on the soundstage for the new ride - Midway Madness. We exited the bus, and walked over to the Streets of America for some conversation about the making of Miracle on 34th street, and then some info about Osborne Lights.... she even showed us where the black cat was hidden this year! It was sent along with all the XMAS decorations from the Osborne Family by mistake, and every year since then when the family comes to view and give their "blessing' on the lights, it is "hidden" in a different location for them to find!

After leaving MGM, we went to the Grand Floridian, to view the tree and the Gingerbread house, and got a taste of the gingerbread.

We then went to see the Holiday Warehouse, it is behind MK near Disney University and the Monorail/train station area where all maintenance is done. The warehouse that that houses all of the Christmas holiday decorations for the theme parks, resorts, cruise lines, Hilton Head and Vero Beach is HUGE, and in the "old days" was the central location for Disney that all food was pre-prepared and then moved to the theme parks and resorts. It was amazing to see boxes and boxes of colored balls, wreaths, trees, etc. It is "empty" right now by Disney standards, and there was still so much. They buy enough decorations for one design for 5 years, as once a design plan for a location is approved (3 years prior to being put into the park or resort), they are locked into that same design for 5 years, so they must have enough decorations to cover loss, breakage, etc.

Our final destination was MK - where we again went backstage behind the Main Street area, and entered the park next to Tony's. We visited Santa's area, however he was on break, but we learned a little history of Santa as we in the US know him, and then walked over by the Noodle Station to view the tree. It is 60 ft tall, and will be moved from it's location next to the castle probably on Saturday or Sunday night to it's location in Town Square after the filming of the Christmas parade.

We the headed back to EPCOT and received as a "gift" a Limited Edition of 1500 Yuletide Fantasy pin - dated 2006 on the back.

It was totally worth the $60 - I think the regular price is closer to $70 with tax, you get a discount with APs or Disney Visa - the Visas discount is 5% more - I think it's 15% and 20%.

I highly recommend this tour for anyone 16 or over - and yes they do require everyone taking the tour to show photo id. Two gentlemen had left their ID in the resort and a CM actually drove them back to get it. One young girl that was a college student was asked by the CM before he realized that if she had proof of age. The tour itself started at 9:30 - we had to be at EPCOT by 9am, and it conclued a little after 12:30 (we had to go back to MK to pick up three people they forgot! - OOPS!)

Thanks for the fantastic review! :thumbsup2
This sounds like a must-do! :sunny:

Thanks for the review I'm taking this tour on 12/11 and I'm very excited now.

You will love it. I had no idea what it was all about with the exception of the little "blurb" I read.

Just a warning - there is one potty break at about 11:30, and no stops for food between 9:00 and 12:30ish. We moved fast!

I have the tour booked next Monday. What time is the check-in at guest services? I think it was 8;45 but forgot to write it down. Can pictures be taken when you are not in the back stages areas.

I don't see why not, the only time I would think photos might not be allowed is in EPCOT's WS prior to opening since there are crews out and working, etc.

They say 8:45, and you really don't "check in" at guest services. All the tour folks gather in the guest services area - there is a blue sign. At about 9am the tour guides arrive, and take roll, check IDs, etc. The tour did not actually leave EPCOT until 9:30.

My original understanding was no camera. However, after we left World Showcase, we were told in the parks themselves it was okay, but nothing in the backstage areas, so I am not sure what the actual "rule" is for WS. No one else had cameras out, so I kept mine in my bag! I did not hear them really address it. With the exception of the time in WS, we spent only a few minutes in MGM and MK, since we accessed them both from backstage areas - we drove and walked through quite a bit! The info they shared was very interesting and in most cases I would have had to miss it to take photos - when we were on the move - we moved! I did not want to linger too long to get separate from the group.

When we entered both MGM and MK, before we left the bus the did a bag check since we were actually entering the park areas without going through security. I found that interesting.

Did you have the option of leaving your bag onboard if you wished? I wanted to bring a jacket for the earlier portion of the morning but didn't want to lug it during the entire tour if at all possible.

Yes - you could leave things on the bus.

They called it our "SLEIGH" today - our drivers name was Nick - so we had Nick driving the Sleigh for the Yuletide tour.

I hope you have James - he was just fabulous, some great personal holiday stories. Wonderful sense of humor. Lisa was very good too. They really seem to LOVE giving this tour, and seemed excited that it was the first day.

I just realized I will be missing one of your Candlelight performances by 1 night - we are going on the 23rd.

What a nice report, Martha!! :thumbsup2 That's a fun tour. I did it a few years ago, recall it well. Thanks for the memories, glad you enjoyed it too.

I'm trying to sign up for more, I just picked up tomorrow's at 5pm a few minutes ago.

Geez, that gives a new meaning to a five-year plan! That's interesting that the decorations for Vero and Hilton Head are stored at WDW. I would have thought they'd keep those onsite for those two resorts.

Thanks for a review on the tour. I'd never heard of it until you mentioned it here, and it sounds really neat.

They also serve the DCL terminal as well. Amazing work they do.

and the two ships. They have all of the shelves labeled and color coded.

They told us that there are 24 full time year round employees, and that they hire another dozen or so to help with the installations. Seems an amazing feat for 36 folks - but those numbers were repeated multiple times, so I am pretty sure I have them right. They were not working when we were on tour, as this time of year they are on 3rd shift, and there are decorations still going up!

We heard interesting facts about their reasons for using artificial trees now - some I'm sure fiscal, but environmental as well. To keep the live trees looking good for so long, they had to do many no so natural things to it, therefore the trees could not be used for mulch in the end, they had to go to the landfills.

I keep remembering little tidbits and facts throughout the days!

Sounds like a very interesting tour. :scratchin Now when can I fit that into my schedule....? :teeth:

Did you book your tour before you left home or once you got there?
Who did you book it with? Sounds really nice. Thanks for the review. :thumbsup2
