You've been randomly selected...

They ask you to take things out of your pockets, and set your things on a table as you go step through the detector. You've already either gone through the "no bag" line, or your bag has been searched. So you just set your already searched bag on the table, and place whatever was in your pockets in a small container, step through, collect your things and head on. It honestly only took a a few seconds. I think just because I was there so long and went park hopping a lot, I just grew weary of the extra 'selection.' But really it was no big deal.

I knew that the weren't Disney Cm's so I kind of paid attention to how they were...were they more like TSA or what would their mannerisms be like? In my experience they acted as friendly, if not more, then the folks doing the bag checks.
Being like TSA can be good or bad.
I've met TSA people who are friendly, efficient, and well trained.
I've also met TSA people who shouldn't have even a modicum of authority and would benefit from a trip out behind the wood shed for a good "talking to."

I know security is a must in world we live in, but I find it really annoying to have to go thru metal detectors at Disney. I guess next, it'll be malls, office buildings, & any other places people go to. So sad.

Many places you mention already have these in place. Not really new. Disney is actually pretty behind the curve on implementing it as I've heard of more than a couple of amusement parks that have had them for a couple of years at least.

Two of us were picked once, one twice, and two none (one was 8). Not bad as we hopped a lot. It doesn't take much time, but it's odd. They are kind of awkward about it. Maybe it's just me, but they sort of just stand to your side and tell you you've been selected for additional screening. Meanwhile if some from your party is a step ahead they keep walking not knowing what's going on (as what happened the first time for us). Id actually rather everyone just walk through them if they are going to have them.

I get randomly selected all the time, which I feel is weird because I carry a tiny purse and general don't even have any pockets. It's not too bothersome though since it is very fast. I just seem to be the "random" person A LOT.

If I get randomly selected I'm going to act all thrilled and be like "YES!!! I've heard about this! We won a night stay in the Cinderella Castle Suite! This is so awesome! Hey everyone! I'm going to be spending tonight in Cinderellla's castle!" And I'll like be acting like those people on The Price is Right after they hear their name and "come on down!" over the loud speakers.

I do like this idea!

I was selected three times on our last trip. My fiancé wasn't checked at all. It honestly doesn't bother me to have random metal detector screenings. We go to six flags a couple times a summer and they make everyone go through metal detectors. Even if you're there at opening, it eats too much of your day. At disney, I've never had to wait in line to go through, i don't carry anything in my pockets, so its literally a 2 second transaction. Go security!

We just got back yesterday from a 7 day trip, my husband was randomly selected all 7 nights when we hopped over to the Magic Kingdom. One night we were both selected, him from the no bag check line and me from the bag check line. It just became a joke with us. No big deal though just kind of humorous since my husband is the least suspicious looking and most easy going person ever, then again maybe that's why he was the one picked.

8 days I was picked 5 times at 3 parks. I was hoping for a 4 park set, but alas AK did want to detect me. I am the one with the bags, they search through them, they talk to me, they ask questions .... and I still get picked. Both DS went bagless and were never picked, even on days with bulky jackets. 8-)
a 4 park set - love that ! AK also was the park that chose not to scan me - I did have the "hat trick" selected 3 times in one day! DH won our competition -he got scanned more than I did and he did get the 4 park set during our January visit.

If I manage a 4 park set (and you should have for your hat trick) I'm going to get a Celebration button and write "4 Park Scanner Survivor".

I was selected 3 times(I think?) during 7 days at the park and we hopped several days.

I figured it was because I bit the bullet with the bags and went through the bag check line while everyone went through the no bags line...

There was definitely a police/security presence. I saw policeman with a sidearm while I was getting off of the monorail heading toward MK and k9 units... I don't remember seeing that 4 years ago. There also seemed to be police and security vehicles near entrances.

I mentioned to my husband that I definitely noticed more security/police this trip compared to our others even then one we just took in June.

I always assumed WDW was pretty safe and took security seriously with undercover security, etc.

I don't know that the extra presence helps anything, but in the current times with everything going on around the world it may discourage some ideas or at least make people feel more comfortable.

The experience relayed by Robo in which he was able to turn down being screened with no consequences demonstrates that this process is limited in stopping bad guys (not that Robo is a bad guy). I've been through random screening areas getting onto airport ramps where I'm sure I would have been in trouble if I had turned down the screening when selected; I doubt I even had an option at that point. At WDW, a bad guy could try bringing in a weapon and if selected, just turn around and leave and try again another time.

Is there a "point of no return" at WDW where a person must give in to a search or screening with no option to retreat?
