You're kid started driving - who took the first ride with them?

I have been the first in the passenger seat twice now. I actually had to teach my youngest DS16 Drivers Ed. That first go was kinda nerve racking, but went just fine. I found that both of my boys were just as nervous as I was about their first trip. My oldest DS is 20, and just admitted that fact.
I found my kids to be very compliant for their first few trips. It's after they have had that license a while that can be a doozy. Then they know it all!!!
That is when I put on my helmet, and the fun begins! Good luck!!! You will honestly laugh about this someday! ;)

My DD can get her permit in September. Seeing as though we're from the same area I'll let you know when she's on the road so we can both stay off of it!!! :teeth:

Well, my mom let me drive home after getting my lerners permit. She never drove with me again (I wasn't even that bad).

Then my dad started taking me, but he had some really off the wall techniques (drive one handed) that I knew was just going to get me failed on my test.

Eventually, my BF at the time took me (he was 5 years older).

I held my temps for 2 years before finally getting my drivers license, 1 day after graduating high school, at the ripe old age of 18.5.

Good luck!! I spent a year in neck therapy after driving shotgun with my 2nd DS!! :teeth: I was constantly looking behind and sideways and all over the place just in case he might miss something like a Mack Truck!!!

My youngest DS just got his permit and yes, I'm back in the passenger seat again. Hoepfully I haven't lost the phone # of my PT!!! :bounce:

I was the first for DS & the only so far.....DH is too chicken:rotfl: DS is very cautious......also a bit nervy......most of his time is with a driving instructor & for him that is better, as with the dual controls they can intervene if & when necessary. Not that DS is a bad driver...far from it.....just very nervy & lacking in self confidence.

Update. I took her in a school parking lot first. She did OK. She was very nervous and seemed a bit afraid to really "turn that wheel", resulting in some VERY wide turns. :earseek:

I then let her drive down kind of a secondary road (MELSMICE, it was Como Park Blvd.) a little way. She managed that pretty well and I had her turn into a parking lot. I then took over until we got to our street where I let her drive into our driveway (that was a little worrisome, as I envisioned us crashing into the garage, but she did OK).

Once she is a little less nervous, I think she'll be fine, but until then, anyone in Western NY might want to stay off the roads. ;)

My ds convinced me that he should be allowed to drive home from the registry right after he got his permit. Since he had been tooling around on go carts, riding mowers and dirt bikes for years, I figured why not just jump right in? It's not like it's big city driving around here.

OMG, my heart was in my throat. It was like the first plunge on a really big roller coaster only it went on for 4 miles. I have to admit, he did very well. I didn't do too badly either . I think I stepped on the invisible brake pedal only one or two times.

Grinning Ghost, I think your father was on to something. Thinking back, stopping at a bar on the way home might have saved me a few gray hairs. :)

Here in NH we don't need a permit--no siree! just live free & die? :goodvibes
DH took DSthen14 for his first drive. As we live in the country not too worrisome, especially when driver is whizzing about @ 15 mph! I have to admit to downing a tranquilizer before riding w/ DS. the helmet sounds like a very practical idea, although I fear the scowl I'd get!
DSnow16 takes driver's ed thank goodness. I did come across him parallel parking last week. It was on a busy, crowded street & he did a super job!.. Now if he would only learn to watch for traffic lights... :scared1:
Speaking of whizzing about, my helpful hint is before you get in that vehicle be sure you have an empty bladder!
