what do you think of this?

Imagine this, it’s the first day of school and the students walk into class to find on the board “write a report of what you did this summer.” So they start writing their papers and one student comes to June. He went on vacation to his cousin’s house and spent a month being pelted by paintballs and, despite his pacifist personality, he shot back. This not being a time he wants to remember, he leaves out this month from his paper and gets marked down. This may be an extreme example, but this style essay assignment can bring back unwanted memories for some students. There are other students who don’t want to be in class. All they see when asked to write this is the start of ten months of boring schoolwork. Finally, there are some students who enjoy writing summer vacation papers, or at least those students who had enjoyable memories throughout the summer.

To keep everyone interested in the assignment the essay guidelines should be loosened. For instance, by allowing the students more freedom in topic choice those who want to write about summer may, but those who don’t may choose to pursue a different topic that pleases them. With this more unusual assignment, those that enjoy writing may still write while those that would rather think about other things might be motivated to participate since it isn’t as boring.

I love essays. period.

Summer vacation essays are a little overdone though. I'd much rather write about some random obscure topic like baboons.

I hate them.
I don't do anythign all summer, so it's nothing worth mentioning.

I love writing any kind of essays.
The summer essays start to get a little boring after awhile.
But I still like to do them, unless I didn't do anything over the summer, then it's just plain boring.

I like writing essays.
Summer essays are fun to right but if I had to write about this summer I probably would leave a lot out.

But luckily we weren't made to write "Tell us about your summer" essay's this year.

this year my teacher had us do an autobiography instead of a summer essay. I really enjoyed that. She said it was one of the best shes seen in years and sent it to my english teacher last year, bragging on it. (I also mentioned my former english teacher in it)

We didn't have to do an essay over our summer either.

This time we had these paper squares and wrote our name as many times as we wanted all over it.

Then we wrote a paper about ourselves and in a paragraph in the paper we explained why we wrote our names the way we did. I mentioned DIS in it.
Because I put ::Kayla:: on my card and I wrote because it had the :: in my DIS unsername. :p

Then we took the card and traced the name onto fabric and are sewing them together so we are making a freshman quilt with everyones piece of fabric.

Believe it or not, I have never in my schooling career written an essay about my past summer.

To the OP - how on Earth would the teacher know that said student was lying or leaving something out?

This summer i kinda hoping we have to do one since I had such a great summer (The first week off from school we went to WDW then the week after that which was the 4th of July we went to Washington D.C. and we got to go to the big concert at the capital where i made it on national tv, and the week after that I went to camp which i'm still at but i leave tomorrow morning since school starts on Wednesday) But I know if you really did nothing it all summer or had a bad summer you would not want to write aabout it

I HATE essays.

Whenever I had to write the summer vacation essays I just made up half the things I wrote.

There's so much more in the world to worry about than summer essays.

Overcoming this thought, my personal opinion would be that essays are okay. I love writing things more freely and not having a set structure.

I dont like writing them because I did nothing. I cant possibly write a full essay on how I sat on the couch and watched TV.

I hate it formatted essays for many reasons:

Teachers expect you to write in that certain format.
Teachers expect that you write an outline beforehand.

I REFUSE to write an outline of what I'm writing about. I write better when, I'm not thinking so hard about an idea, because when I start writing, everything flows onto the paper better, with more creativity.
