Looking for your input!

We stayed at POR last year and loved it. We stayed in the AB buildings since we are a family of 5. We were in building 28 and it seemed like a good spot. It was close enough to the main pool and main buildings, and the West Depot. I’ve requested the same building this year, but I’m not sure if I want to be in the exact same spot one year to the next.

I don’t feel the need to spend the extra for a preferred room, so any input is appreciated based on your experience.

In two stays werwere in the 30s buildings each time--35 then 37. I liked both but preferred 37 for bus depot proximity (North Depot is just steps away) and because the path to the main building felt shorter--fewer twists and turns.

Neither were particularly great for quick runs to the food court or gift shop, but with a little planning that didn't matter.

We requested building 16 and liked the proximity to pool, lobby and the main bus depot (North?) is just across the parking lot. Plus, our room was directly across the quiet pool. We had room 1621.

I totally agree! We stayed in building 16 and it is very close to the main building, the quiet pool is right outside the building and it's adjacent to the parking lot! We've also stayed in 18, but I see it's now a preferred building (preferred buildings did not exist when we stayed there). We preferred building 16 since it was so close to the parking lot (we rented a car).

we were in building 17 our last stay in Jan/Feb....loved the location-close to both quiet pool and South Depot, and right next to the parking lot where our car was parked!

First, thanks for the responses! :thumbsup2 A couple of questions.

  1. Were your rooms booked as standard rooms, or did you opt to pay extra for a garden view?
  2. Second, were you facing the parking lot? If so, was the view pretty bad?
My concern is that last year we had a garden view (only option for Free Dining), and that made sense for building 28 since it is surrounded by lush bushes and trees. This year we opted for standard rooms and I'm wondering if 28 is even an option or if we'll end up facing a parking lot at some other building.

Well, I looked at portorleans.org and answered some of my own questions. I looked at the POR buildings map (which is awesome by the way). It shows every room in every building and what category it fall into (standard, garden view, river view, etc...)

Looks like ALL of the standard views DO face the parking lot. We stayed at POR last year for 8 nights, but I'm trying to remember how bad the parking lot views are. Looks like the building we were in (28) is indeed ALL garden view. I can get a standard room in building 16 or 17, but they will face the parking lot.

Looks like we might be upgrading to garden view... for another $10-$11 per night. We're there for a while, 9 nights, so a nice room location and view is important.

we had a garden view in bldg 17...definitely worth the extra $10 per night for me. So much so that I booked it again for December! We had a standard two years ago in Magnolia Bend...it definitely faced the parking lot but it was on the third floor just around the corner from the elevators so we could still enjoy the view on the walk to our room.

in AB, though, I LOVED the garden view.

Where can I see this map that shows all the rooms ?

The landscaping is so lush and beautiful at POR that even in a standard room that faces the parking lot, you would have to try really hard to actually see the parking lot.

This is just my family's opinion, but we don't feel it is worth the extra $$ for a certain view when staying at a moderate. There are no balconies so to actually enjoy the view you have to have the blinds open. When in the room, we do not like having everyone that walks by be able to look into our room. If we want to relax and enjoy a view, we will sit out at one of the benches by the water or in one of the courtyards. Now the couple times we have stayed deluxe, it is definitely worth the extra $$ for a good view because we have a balcony to sit out on and enjoy. Again, just our opinion.

I agree with everything dansdad said. We don't like having everyone look inside our room either as people walk by. The grounds of POR are beautiful...everywhere you walk, the landscaping is gorgeous. Paying for a view is not important to us.

At a deluxe I'm willing to pay more for a view, but not at a moderate.

I haven't stayed in Alligator Bayou, but I love the location of Acadian House.. close to the bridge for the pool and buses. So my vote would be for building 38 or 39!

Just click on a building in the map and it will open a detailed view with the details for each room.

Thank you ! I have seen this map before but didnt know you could click on it to see each room :thumbsup2 We would like to be right by the quiet pool in lodge 18 preferred room. Looking at the map looks like most the pool side rooms are pool view. So I guess I could not ask for preferred pool view room lol

We stayed in bldg. 17 room 1733 for the first time in March. I had sent in a fax request asking for something close to everything, on the corner of the second floor. Suprisingly I received all my requests, and they actually upgraded us to a garden view (pixie dust) pixiedust: I loved this location close to everything, nice views and the little walk we had felt like you were in the bayou. Can't wait to go back!!

Glad it could help! Pretty awesome map for sure.

We loved our garden view last year, but I agree about the lushness of POR and that even a parking lot view isn't horrible.

My main concern is hearing slamming car doors, or cars starting, etc while we're trying to sleep. We spend so little time in our room relative to everything else at Disney that the view isn't super critical. (although building 28, which is all garden view, was very nice)...

ahh, decisions...
