Hi all,

Looking at a short getaway for my DH and I in October. We found a cheap flight so now I'm looking for lodging in Yosemite. I'd love to stay at the Awahnee, but $700 a night is a bit much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Unfortunately, I'm not really the camping type and DH is a "hose-head" (i.e., he has a Bi-Pap for sleep apnea).

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Since it sounds like you want a hotel room I would suggest the Yosemite Lodge. It's right by Yosemite Falls, and will provide your husband with the much needed electrical outlets. Another option is at Curry Village. The canvas tent cabins do not have electrical outlets, but the hard sided cabins and "motel style" rooms do. Curry Village will be more along the lines of "roughing" it if you are not accustomed to minimal lodging amenities. I have stayed in all of Curry's lodging options as well as Yosemite Lodge's over the years and find them all comfortable. Although we usually camp when we go, unless we're there at a time when there's snow on the ground.

We decided to go to Yosemite too late to get a room at the Yosemite Lodge and I did not want to stay in a tent cabin at Curry Village (their regular cabins were booked.) We stayed at Yosemite Cedar Lodge in El Portal. It was about a 30-minute drive to the Yosemite Valley parking lot. The Cedar Lodge had an indoor and outdoor pool, two restaurants and a gift shop. There was also a small beach down by the river. They had regular motel rooms, but we stayed in a two-room family suite that had a small kitchen. The Cedar Lodge has a sister motel, Yosemite View Lodge, that is about 10 minutes closer to Yosemite, but we didn't stay there because it didn't have suites.

We stayed south of Yosemite at the Tenanya Lodge. It was gorgeous. The drawback was it took over an hour to get from the Lodge to the valley floor. It was very convenient to the mariposa grove and sequoia trees though.

I bet October in Yosemite would be stunning!

We stayed at the Yosemite View Lodge. It was nothing special but very convenient to Yosemite. We went in 1997. A little history about Yosemite Cedar Lodge. In 1999 Cary Stayner, a handyman at Cedar Lodge murdered four women. He was the brother of Steven Stayner who was kidnapped by Kenneth Parnell at the age of seven and escaped seven years later with a newly captured little boy, Timmy White. The movie, "I know my name is Steven" is based on that story. He died at the age of 23 in 1989 in a motorcycle accident, on his way home from work. Timmy White, the little boy he rescued went on to become a deputy in the Merced, Ca. sheriff's Dept. He died at the age of 35 from a pulmonary embolism. Kenneth Parnell did not even serve 7 years for the kidnappings or the molestation but was later arrested when he attempted to do it again! He at last is dead from natural causes.

There is a wonderful bed and breakfast in Mariposa that we have stayed at a few times. We really love it! It is a different Inn keeper now than the last time we stayed, but the house is cozy and wonderful, and the breakfast was always amazing. It was so nice to come back from a long day of hiking and soak in the big tub and then rest in a big comfy bed (we have always stayed in the Forest room) I think it's pretty dang affordable too!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We booked at Yosemite View Lodge in part because of how close it is to Yosemite and in part because it was available! I guess beggars can't be choosy when you're doing something 2 weeks out.

I'll post a review when I get back....until then we are Yosemite dreaming!

It is so close, you won't be sorry!

Thanks Dawn.

BTW, I remember seeing a "made for TV" movie about Steve Stayner. His story was incredibly sad. I also remember reading about his brother and I wondered what would have made him do such an awful thing!

I'm so jealous. I got to see it for the first time in May. While there was still slush on the ground, I still want to see it in its full winter glory. Prices are a bit better during the dead of winter, down to 200$ per night.

I want to get back there as I only saw a small small portion of it. Bridalveil falls, the Valley, and drove down to the Marisopa Grove. Seeing the redwoods was the whole point of going, so I wasn't disappointed in it. I can't wait to see the upper half with Half Dome.

Karen,

My partner Lisa has a battery for her C-Pap machine. It has allowed us to camp where there are no electrical outlets available and has made for a wonderful summer! They are expensive, but it has been SOOOO worth it.

Have fun in Yosemite!!

Hmmm...a battery pack. I'm thinking I need to check into a new bi-pap machine for the hubby! We've thought about taking a white water rafting trip with camping in WV and doing many other things that we later can't due because of the hose/cord.

This is good news! Thanks!
