YIKES! Unwanted credit card in the mail

YIKES!!!
I gotta post this. Last nite I was cooking dinner and looking through the mail. I ran across an envelope with a card inside. I took a look and it wasn't a dummy card (IE: Jane Doe 0123 4567 8910) it was a REAL credit card with MY name on it and a sticker saying call to activate. I looked closer and it is a prepaid 9.95 per month credit card. So not as bad but STILL! I was worried, angry and confused as to who requested/applied for this card. So I called and the woman on the line said it was a promotional thing that they are doing. (WHAT?!?!) Right away she said she'd take me off their list and it sounded like it wasn't the first call like this they've had. I confirmed with her, it is an ACTUAL credit card. I said what if this fell into the wrong hands and they had the right information? I know its a prepaid credit card but still! Its a credit card with MY NAME on it. I told her I know it isn't her fault, (I wasn't yelling at all during our conversation, I think I stayed calm) that she's just a desk jockey like me but to let someone higher up know I think this is wrong, not fraudulent (not yet) but WRONG.

So be careful when going through your mail. I won't be getting anything else from this company but who knows what other companies will start doing this.

Wow! that would annoy me too. good for you for calling & letting them know. And your warning is an important one. Never assume that it's "just" junk mail--open it & check out the contents.

They need an already existing credit card number or bank account number to load money to it and have access to the monthly fee they charge. I smell scam.

Double check to see if this is a gift card with some value already loaded onto it. But don't use it if doing so will activate an account with a $9.95 per month fee going on forever.

I would suggest contacting the Federal Trade Commission and talk to someone there. They might ask you to forward the card to them. It sounds as if someone should be put out of business and/or hit with very heavy fines.

Sorry just realized that my DH called and as he's calling and I'm ranting as I'm cooking food they had asked him for my social sec # and I gave it to him. OH NO. I said to him it might be a scam to get my ss#. He said naw, doubtful. But now........
It was something like the First Bank of california. Or First State Bank of California.
I think I need to call someone.

Are you kidding?

This is not a credit card, nor it is a line of credit. It is a card you can (for the bargain price of $10 a month) use like a Visa or Mastercard when you preload it with funds from your bank account. Why on earth would either of you even call these people???

Put a credit lock/fraud alert with all three credit monitoring companies.

Denise is right. Sorry, it sounds like it was a successful phishing attempt for your SS#. Best close the barn doors as best you can .
