When I came home from shopping today, DH was making lunch for the kids so the counter was full and I put my plastic grocery bag down on the stove. I didn't realize the burner was hot and ugh, what a mess!!

Does anyone know if there is a way to get melted plastic off of an electric burner? Am I just going to have to replace the burner itself?

I have no idea if it will work for you or not, but my son put that plastic lid to the trash can up on the stove as he was changing the bag for aluminum cans. It actually melted when I had the oven on if you can believe that.

I was able to scrub and peel much of it off (your bag would be thinner) then I was able to burn the rest off. I just put the burner to high for about 10 minutes and it was good to go. I'm sure it won't smell great, but I'd try burning it off before replacing it.

Good Luck!

Can you just chip it off once it's cold?? I did something similar recently, but it was with thicker plastic, and it did just chip right off the burner.

If that doesn't work, I would try the Magic Eraser.

Once it's cold it should come off. If not, when it's heated maybe it will burn off, even though it will stink.

Thanks guys. I knew you would come through! I will peel/chip off what I can and let the rest burn off. Peyuw. (Wonder how you actually spell that??)

I did something similiar about a month ago, and I resorted burning it off. Magic eraser didn't work for me, but maybe it will for you.

I have had that happen a few times. I have always had to burn it off. I just turned the burner up high, took a paper towel that was either wet w/ soap or took some countertop wipes (Clorox or Lysol) and that seems to clean it off. Just be careful with the towel, being wet it won't burn up, but if you leave it too long you could singe something or burn yourself.

Don't bother trying to chip it off, doesn't work at all, and neither does scraping when hot. The liquid on a towel is the only thing that worked for me.
