Do you encounter the abominable snowman on both the Tomorrowland and Fantasyland sides of the ride? I think you hear him and maybe see his eyes glowing on both sides but cannot remember if he is on both sides. My son is a bit scared of him so wondering if one side is better than the other.

Both sides!

:wizard:

Yup he makes a physical appearance twice on both sides and then at the top of each lift you also see his glowing red eyes!

There are Matterhorn videos on YouTube plus photos of the Yeti on Google image search - we did that with my DD so she could see him before deciding if she wanted to go or not.

In my opinion, the Yeti effect is better on the left side. The one you see as you round a corner going from a view of Small World toward the interior of the mountain. That one is the best.

My son went on the ride when he was almost 5 and remembers (not in a good way) the Yeti. That was 2.5 years ago so we will see how it goes. We did Tomorrowland side so maybe we will give opposite side a try this time.

I believe the Fantasyland side to be slower and less scary vis a vis the Yeti.

The yeti bothered my girls when they were younger. They loved Monsters Inc so I kept telling them that the abominable snowman was the Yeti from Matterhorn and it worked. They couldn't wait to see him on the next trip.

Both my kids were really scared by the Matterhorn snow monster. I think part of the scariness is how loud the yeti scream/growls at the bobsled in the dark. My DD who is 10 now still doesn't like it and is especially unnerved b/c she no longer gets to sit in my lap like she did in the old snuggle-up sled configuration. She has to face it all on her ownsome.

My 4 year old grand daughter was wisked off to ride the Matterhorn (against my suggestions NOT to take her!) and was scare to death. She came off screaming "There's a monster in there!" I very calmly told her "Oh, you saw Harold! They should have told you, you're suppose to scream back at him to scare him!" From then on, she would ask on every ride..."is there someone I can scream at on this ride?" LOL!! We screamed at the witch on Snow White's Scary Adventure and she thought that was fun! I think sometimes if you warn the little ones ahead of time and make a game out of the scary parts, it's not quite as scary.:)

The last 2 times I went on the ride (January and March) growl was not as loud as it was when the ride first re-opened in June.

I also told my son to imagine the Monsters Inc. abominable snowman offering you sno cones. I think knowing what to expect will also make a difference.

First time my daughter braved the ride she was 10, she came off of it freaked out about the Yeti. My friend asked her if she knew that his eyes were red because he was crying because of all the people yelling at him. She hated to think of anyone sad so she got brave and went on it again yelling...."I love you Harold!" as she went past him. 14 years later she still yells that at him.

I think I'm still scared of that stupid thing! Although I do love that ride!:confused3

Glad I'm not the only one. I'm 30, and he freaks me out. This last time was the first time I didn't close my eyes, trying to miss him. (I was too busy trying to keep my head from vibrating off since the re-do, I think...)

I've told my oldest that he's waving at us and to wave back. I've also said its the abominable snowman Monsters Inc. and that he's nice and would never hurt you. Last trip my son was 4 and proudly sat in the front of the new cars all alone and had a blast (and waved to Harold).

It still scares me sometimes too. The last time we rode I think they turned up the volume. The Yeti was really loud. If he likes roller coasters just have him focus on the ride rather than the yeti.

It make you jump for sure, scared the crap out of my kid....but once i told her to scream back at it and try to scare the Yeti it got better. She is 5 :)

Oh yeah, it makes me jump too sometimes, when I forget about it!

He used to terrify me (all visual scary stuff scared me), but it was a ride I could tolerate because I knew I could close my eyes whenever the sled went into the mountain and open them when I was outside (as opposed to Haunted Mansion when I was terrified the whole time). I still have the urge to close my eyes when we go into the mountain and it's been 15 years since I was scared of the yeti.
