I posted a few weeks ago about a Canadian who wants to buy our motorhome (actually him, DW, DSis, and DBIL). Well, everything seems to be legit, they've sent me their bank contact info, we've both talked extensively to customs on both sides, I have their names/addys/phones, etc.

The plan is to go to my bank on Monday, the 13th, and have a purchase agreement notarized and deposit the $$. HOWEVER, they've just emailed me asking if they can come in already on Sat night. I had offered to let them sleep in the mh in our yard, thinking they would come in late on Sun, do the banking on Mon, and be gone. I'm a little hesitant about having them Sat night, all day Sun, and Mon a.m. The mh is winterized, so they'd have to use our bathroom, and I'd feel obliged to cook (even though I know I shouldn't feel that way). I know they're travelling over 13 hours, and so I do feel bad for them, but they are "strangers"! I'm going to be out of town all this upcoming week (DH will be home), only getting back in myself late on Friday.

So, do I say:
1)sure come whenever you want
2)lie and say I'm not going to be home until Sat, so Sun would be better
3)send them the name and number of the closest hotel:)

Help!
Terri

I would not be comfortable with them "staying" in the motor home until the check has cleared or the funds are confirmed by the bank. Too much could happen..
I'm sure that they are nice people, but due to the motor home being winterized they shouldn't expect to stay in it and need to come into your house for the rest room unless they are your family. That can be your excuse. That and the fact that you already have conflicting weekend plans :rolleyes1, so sorry you can't host them any earlier then originally agreed upon. They are still strangers after all.

We don't have to wait for the $$ to clear, at least (that was a nightmare to figure out unto itself), so shouldn't take us more than an hour or so Monday a.m.

It's hard because up here people just tend to stop by and "stay awhile";) on the vaguest pretense of knowing you (or knowing someone you know). There's hospitality, and then there's well, reality:).

I'm leaning towards telling them, "Sunday at the earliest, but here's some hotels if you need one for Saturday night". Would that be fair?

Thanks!
Terri

I'd stick with going to the Bank on Monday and you have other plans for the weekend. I would not be comfortable having them underfoot all weekend. They could be serial killers for all you know. :scared1:

I vote for this option. Make it sound like you are busy Sat and Sun (like 'not sure exactly what time we will be home Sunday' or something) and then hopefully they will get the hint and book the hotel for both nights!

I know, I just read the "serial killer" thread myself! DH is a gun-totin' redneck (and I say that with love and a chuckle), so we're pretty well self-protected since he'll be here the whole time. They are going to have to have at least a few hours here since they're hooking up a car trailer that they're going to tow the car home on that they drove here, check out the mh itself, etc.

I'll just breath a sigh of relief when it's all done!

Terri
(And, yes, my DH is one of those "country folk" who'll meet a person once at an event halfway across the country and invite them to "come visit for awhile". Gotta love him!)

This has all the ear marks of a huge mistake, do not let them stay in YOUR camper until it is sold to them. Give them names and numbers of local hotels if they can't afford a hotel they can't afford your camper.
These are not your friends these are business associates, period. Make sure that check clears before handing over keys. Good luck on this boy, this is a scary and tricky one.

Honestly, since you've already told them they could stay in the motorhome Sunday night, you're in a little bit of a bind (hard to say that you can use our facilities Sunday night but not Saturday night :confused3).

It it were me, I wouldn't want them even for Sunday night. I would probably find them a hotel room (at my own expense since I first told them they could stay in the motorhome Sunday night - which I'm sure you wish you could redo now ;)) and mark it up to a lesson learned.

Hi, other Terri,
Believe me, I thought it was a total scam at first, too, but have had our state police check into it, and our bank call their bank and verify it, too. I've googled them and all sorts of related purchase scams. I'm in no rush to sell it, and am untrusting by nature (unlike DH!), so will call the whole thing off if anything seems fishy.

That sounds like a good solution.

Yoopermom, I'm an older-than-dirt, former "troll" - for those who don't know...Michiganders who live under the bridge. ;)

I understand where you're comin' from, these may be perfectly nice people. But unless you're willing to take the risk of a worst case scenerio, it's much safer to have a vague "something has come up" and at least limit this to the original one-night agreement.

FWIW, tell your DH that I had my radio/EIGHT TRACK CASSETTE PLAYER :scared1: stolen from my 1971 Camero in Mio, MI because my brother assured me "you don't have to lock stuff around here!" :rotfl::lmao:

I would be very hesitant to have strangers have access to my home.

I would say sorry & give them names & numbers to hotels/notels in the area.
