Yet Another Tipping Question

So, when you are tipping, are you tipping for the keeping of the room from the day before, or are you tipping to encourage the next days stuff to be ok? I mean, I expect the room to be clean when I check in. That is part of the contract. In fact, I have asked to switch rooms before when it has not been clean. I wait for the maid to clean the room, and if they give excellent service, then I tip the next day. My reasoning is if it is not cleaned adequately, I don't leave a tip, or I leave a lower tip. If it is done very well, then a higher one. I have tipped on the first day and still received crappy housekeeping. I then tend to resent having left a tip and feel angry.

However, it seems like a lot of people tip before they see the results of the maid service.

What do you all think?

I agree it's kind of a catch 22. But I hope that by tipping it will encourage the housekeeper to do a really great job for me. I've generally hada great results for leaving a tip--with little special touches.

How do you leave a tip (with special touches)? We have made our own envelopes - it was a great excercise to get my 10 year old daughter to play on the computer - with MS Word and downloaded Disney fonts and Word Art. We were actually thinking about doing money origami. We found a page that shows how you can make butterflies, etc... our of dollar bills. We may do that tomorrow, although I am a little nervous about the traveling with it. If I can print out instructions, maybe we will do it on the plane.

AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

This question....debate....always hurts my brain!!!!

Will there ever be a definative answer!?!?!?!

"Tune in next week for AS THE TIP TURNS"........

LOL:p :p :p

My DH does money oragami :D
He likes the challenge. He just made them up himself last trip but I think I will print some pages up for him this time.
He and housekeeping were havign a fun "competition.

I do several things. I've folded the bills into origami cranes. On longer trips I like to find out which days my housekeeper is going to be off to make sure I am as fair as possible with the "regular" housekeeper. I've left small boxes of chocolates, pre-paid phone cards, and other small items with the tip for outstanding service.

I never thought about leaving anything but money. That is an interesting idea. I will have to entertain that for our next trip.

I have worked with housekeeping staffs and found that they are typically VERY appreciative of a tip. Many people don't think about leaving a tip for them.

I leave the tip on a daily basis. That way the person cleaning the room gets the tip. I've also found that usually I get much better service when I leave a tip...a few extra towels, soaps, shampoos and a cleaner room...

But it is a catch 22...
