I'm having a hard time understanding how really important it is to have your "home" resort where you will normaly stay.

The way I understand it, the primary difference between staying at your "home" resort is that you can book it 11 months in advance. If you book at one of the other resorts, you can only book 7 months in advance. Honestly, how important is this? We would almost NEVER go to WDW or the beach during peak seasons. Are all the rooms gone at 7 months?

We thought that one could buy points fom a reseller for Hilton Head and then use them at WDW in the off-season like September. The difference in the price per point between HH and say Boardwalk is sometimes $20 PP.

Am I looking at this right?

There are some really great events that happen during the non-peak seasons. Specifically the Food & Wine festival at Epcot, or the Flower & Garden also at Epcot. Lots of DVC'ers go for these events, and rooms can and do fill fast. There are other reasons too, that no doubt, more experienced DVC'ers will post about.

If you are always going in September, then the 7 month window will probably be fine, but if you ever want to go between Thanksgiving and Christmas or the first half of January, or even October, then maybe not. It also depends on which resort you are hoping for. If you have no preferences and will take ANY DVC unit of the size you require, I'm sure the 7 month window will be fine for most time except for the first two weeks of December and holidays.

The importance of home resort depends on the buyer, how attached they are to specific resorts, and their vacation habits. Here's a good thread discussing the various home resort strategies

You can buy HH less expensively than BWV or other WDW resorts. But you forgot an important aspect...annual dues. If you're going for the cheapest route, you'd probably be better off buying an OKW or SSR resale with dues $.60 -$.80 per point cheaper per year right now than HH. The price per point to purchase isn't much different and you would come out ahead in the long run.

Also, you would have the added benefit of being able to book a WDW resort at the 11 month window if you do choose to visit WDW during a peak DVC time at some point in the next 30+ years.

I forgot about the dues. Thanks. It's all so complicated.
