I have some of the old 5-day park hopper (not plus) passes. The ticket price paid for them, through WDW, was $230, plus tax. (Total of about $244.)
I'm a little slow on the MYW thing. (Not sure why -- I'm usually pretty good at figuring out disney stuff, but these tickets are complicated.)
So, I can trade in my old park hoppers and get dollar for dollar credit toward MYW tickets. A ten-day, never expire, park hopping MYW ticket is roughly $362. (I assume that since I'd be doing a dollar credit trade, there's no way for me to get an advance purchase discount.) So, to buy one of those tickets, I'd be out of pocket an extra $118.
There is no doubt that I would eventually use 10 days of park hopping tickets. It might take a number of years -- so upgrading to an annual passport makes no sense for me. If I do this upgrade, I've essentially purchased an addition 5-day park hopper pass for $118, or about $24 a day.
What's the catch? Why on earth wouldn't I do this immediately? When on earth would I ever be able to purchase 5 days of park hopping for $118? A 5-day no expire hopper would cost me nearly $270 and I can buy one now for $118 -- locking in the price forever. There must be something I'm missing. (And, while I'm at it, I could also get 5 plusses on each ticket for an additional $45 -- or $9 per plus?)
