I am cleaning out my freezer and noticed some Omaha Steaks and Omaha Hamburgers. I believe I purchased them last summer. Do you think they are still safe to eat?

I have a question about this too, I bought a frozen turkey to make at Christmas and we ended up going to friends for dinner. I still have the bird in the freezer, is it still okay to cook/eat?

The Omaha stuff - as far as safe, yes, it's perfectly safe. However, it will probably taste very freezer burned and not very good in general. The taste quality really drops after something is frozen for more than a few months.

The turkey should be fine if you cook it sometime soon, otherwise it'll get freezer burned as well.

I would cook all of it. We have never had a problem with keeping meat in the freezer for much longer than a few months.

I read somewhere that meat is good in the freezer for 6 months.
Don't know if it's true.

I've found that Omaha steaks are ususally so well wrapped that they've last longer then the typical 6 month rule. So if it's unopened I'd say yes.

I had read, and just verified below - that meat that has been in the freezer is "safe" to eat. It is just more a question of food quality. If it doesn't show signs of freezer burn, it would be safe to eat. I have used freezer burned meat for things likes soups and stews with no problem.

I agree. They use a thicker shrink wrap.

butcher once told me that if the meat doesn't have any grey spots/areas on it then it is safe to eat.

Thanks! I think I'll keep the steaks and toss the burgers. I am always a bit more careful when it comes to ground meat.
