I recently purchased my first home and I am not very knowledgeable about taking care of my yard. Other than mowing the lawn, watering it, and pulling weeds we haven't done much with it. I am thinking about hiring someone to do some pruning and clearing some plants we don't want and general yard clean up. My yard probably about 1,000 square feet. I think it would be one day of work a couple of times a year.

Does anyone else have any experience with hiring yard care help? Should I hire a company? Look to craigslist? I have no idea what kind of costs to expect. Any direction on how to budget would be very appreciated.

I would ask your neighbors who they use. Note what trucks are in the area doing the work that you are needing as well. We did this with our lawn company. We loved the neighbor's yard so we called their company. Our yard has now won as one of the best in the neighborhood (we do most of the work).

I recommend you join Angie's List. We've always gotten good service and prices from companies and people with good scores. Now that you own a house, you'll need other kinds of services, too.

For general clean up and other manual labor tasks, I'd just ask around the neighborhood and/or your church if you have one. Odds are someone has a friend or relative that would appreciate a little extra work/income.
