Does anyone know if Yankee Candle guarantees their candles? Or has anyone had any experience trying to bring back a candle they have already used?

I bought one of those new swirl candles and although I love the scent (macintosh/harvest) the way the candle is burning is not right. It is burning right down the center and I have all of this wax on the side that will never get used because of the way it is burning. It is hard to explain, I hope you get the idea.

I guess first I should ask if anyone else is having a problem with their swirl candles, because perhaps this is the way they burn. But I really think I have a dud and I would love to see if I can have it replaced.

Did you follow the directions on the bottom of the candle?

Safety And Burning Tips
At Yankee Candle, we want you to experience the maximum enjoyment and pleasure from our candles. We take great pride in making them using only the finest quality ingredients and materials. However, it’s very important that you burn candles responsibly to ensure their safe use. Please follow these guidelines to keep Yankee® candles a bright and beautiful part of your life.

Remove all packaging before lighting.
Place on a protected, heat-resistant, dry surface, away from anything that can catch fire, and out of reach of children and pets. Use holders designed for the particular candle style.
Keep wick(s) trimmed to 1/8” at all times.
If smoking occurs, blow candle out. Trim wick(s), remove trimmings, and relight.
Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, or any combustible material. Keep the wick centered.
Avoid burning candles in drafts.
Never leave burning candles unattended. Keep them within sight at all times.
Keep all matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
Teach everyone in the family the rules of safe candle use.
Jars

Handle with care; glass containers are fragile. Avoid glass-to-glass contact when removing or replacing the lid. Do not use if the jar is cracked, chipped or scratched. Do not refill with wax.
Do not allow the flame to touch the side of the jar. The jar may become hot. Handle carefully.
If smoking occurs, check for drafts or high traffic areas, which may cause flame to flicker and smoke. Also, be sure that the wick is no longer than 1/8". If it is, extinguish, trim to 1/8", and relight.
To minimize wax left on the sides of the jar, burn 3 hours at a time; it is normal for some wax to be left. The amount will vary per color, fragrance and burning conditions.
Prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface by discontinuing use when 1/2" of wax remains. Only burn in a suitable holder, or on a plate or other fire and heat resistant surface.
Extinguish carefully before replacing the lid.
Pillars

When wax pool reaches the candle’s edge, extinguish flame and allow candle to harden before relighting. This will prevent dripping.
Discontinue use when 1/2" of wax remains.
Never place directly on furniture. Only burn in an appropriate holder.
Tapers

To prevent possible dripping: avoid drafts, excessive vibrations or nearby heat sources.
Candle (hurricane) lamps may cause dripping due to the build up of heat. We suggest using bobeche, decorative accessories designed to catch dripping wax.
Be sure tapers are straight, and set them firmly in their holders.
Trim the taper's wick to 1/8" before lighting.
Scented Tea Lights

Do not burn in an enclosed space like a potpourri pot. For this purpose use Yankee® Tart® Warmers (unscented tea lights), and be sure the burner is well ventilated.
If wick smokes or builds up carbon, extinguish flame and remove the carbon before relighting.
Samplers® Votive Candles

Burn only in an appropriate holder. Do not burn freestanding.
Tarts® Wax Potpourri

Place Tarts® Wax Potpourri in the top of a dry potpourri burner and never add water. Light one of the unscented Tarts® Warmers (never use scented tea lights) for a controlled low flame made especially for potpourri burners. When melted, the wax potpourri will release its wonderful fragrance.
To change fragrance, extinguish the Tarts® Warmer flame and allow the melted Tarts® Wax Potpourri to harden. Gently tap the sides of the burner and in most cases the wax will pop out. Discard the melted wax potpourri or store in a plastic bag for reuse.
If using an electric potpourri pot, we recommend that you use one that is UL listed for safety assurance.

Good question~ I actually just noticed that my voltives are doing this, but never had this problem in years past. I am wondering if they changed something with either their candles or the wick! I get to the bottom of a voltive and have quite a bit of candle left on the sides but there is no wick left. Sorry I don't have the answer, but thought I'd let you know my candles have the same problem.

Generally, I don't have a problem if I burn them for at least 3-4 hours at a time, and I usually use one of those lid things too...

Thanks so much for this information, I think I will try taking it back to the store.

Most definitely, I have been burning candles (mostly Yankee Candles) for years and years and have never had this kind of problem. I just wondered if it had something to do with the swirl candles.

Could be tiggerlover; I don't know. I live really close to the flagship store so I usually buy stuff out of the seconds room  I haven't tried any of the new swirl candles because I have so many other of their candles (I am not exaggerating when I say I could open a small YC store) that I refuse to go there until I've used up alot of them.

Plus, I found some really good incense at a local organic store that I love and I have been burning that alot instead of candles.

they are very good about taking back anything.

someone....somewhere...sometime ;) mentioned that they will even take back a candle that is half way gone and you decide you don't like it. I haven't tried, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I've had that problem, but usually because I didn't let the candle burn long enough. It should burn until the wax reaches the edges.

Her's a little tip: I save the candle when it burns down to 1/2 inch. I take the wick out and save the rest of the candle to use in a tart burner.

At Yankee Candle's prices, nothing goes to waste.

tiggerlover...you JINXED me! LOL ;)

I lit my new Harvest/Mac swirl the other day after reading andposting on your thread....and I am having the same problem!!
I wonder if it is related to the "swirl" thing?!?!
Did you bring yours back?

I've never had any problems with them, and I even bought a candle warmer for that tiny bit of wax that's left in the bottom of the jar after burning... the warmer can be found for about $5 at a craft store, and it just heats up the wax.. it's awesome! :)

I would imagine, though, that Yankee would take it back.

My sister works at Yankee Candle and yes you can return them even if they are burned half way down.....even if you just don't like the scent too. I just got 6 large jars for 50.00 through her employee day deal and bought 4 of the new caramel vanillas and I have been burning one and really don't think the scent is strong enough....so I am going to exchange them...probably for my all time favorite...Buttercream!!!

She gets 50% off all the time too......kinda cool!!!

I have a couple swirl ones and havent had a problem

I was wondering the same thing about returns. I bought 2 large Midsummer's Night jars last Friday and I burned one of them for a long time and it never had a fragrance. Anyone ever have that happen?

I tried to return one of the large candles to the store where I bought it. They refused to take it back and insisted I had to mail it to Yankee Candle. Well, to do that, the postage would be nearly the cost of what I origionally paid for the candle. It turned out to be more beneficial for me to keep the candle. Yes, they're guaranteed, but at a cost. :(

Was it an actual "Yankee Candle" store???

Read my reply to this post up above.....

Just now happened to check back to this post. No, it wasn't and I'm certain that's the reason I had to mail the candle to YC for my refund. Knowing this, I'll always deal directly with YC from now on. :teeth:

I wonder if it's that particular candle. I've had the same problem with the same scent. My Aunt has as well.

I took mine back to the YC store yesterday. I'd tried burning it a couple more times for 4-5 hour stretches, with the lid, and the wick trimmed, but it still only burnt down the middle, with a really low flame and not much scent from the small area of melted wax.

The manager said they'd had some other complaints on the Swirl candles, but ONLY the Harvest/Mac combination, and not ALL of them sold had the problem! She gave me a choice of a refund, an exchange for a new one, or an exchange for other merchandise. I got a plain Mac instead with the $3.00 price difference in cash...which I promptly used towards a few new tart scents....

Cocoa Peppermint
Peppermint Cranberry....
and a Christmas one called Snow Angel

:)

I just called DS about this question-he's a supervisor at a company that makes scented candles (yes, a few Yankee Candles, also Kohls, Home Interiors, a few others). He said that the first time you burn any scented candle, always burn it until the melted wax reaches the glass. Do NOT just light it for 1/2 hour or so-this often causes what he calls "The tunnel effect". I didn't know that. However, if it's after the first time you're kind of stuck-the wick is probably too small then and your best bet, if you can, is to return it. But I didn't know about this burning the first time-did everyone else except me?

Well, I don't know if everyone else but you knew ;) , but I've known for awhile and always do burn it for at least a few hours to avoid the tunneling. But for some reason some of these H/M Swirl ones are tunneling anyway, according to the manager I spoke with.
