I was just wondering how far in advance should I purchase the Y.E.S. tickets?
I'm going in Oct, but I'm not sure if I should buy the tickets now or wait until a discount package hopefully free dining becomes available.

Yes, we normally stay at a DVC resort. I notice classes are open for Oct. I wasn't sure if I had to buy the tickets now or could I wait until it gets closer.

We are not sure if we want to use our points or book a package.

YES tickets are nonrefundable and they go fast.

I would take a look at the mousesavers list of historic discounts, and see what the odds are of getting a discount for the dates you're going.

Have you checked availability for those dates in October? Between F&W and MNSSHP, (and the low number of points needed to book), that time of year is in demand among DVC members. Don't wait too long to decide or else the decision could be made for you.

There are some DVC rooms available.
I thought of doing free dining but based on the boards it looks like it might not happen in October.
Unless you need to borrow points or would miss a banking deadline, why not just book the DVC stay for now and cancel if a better deal comes up later? You should have plenty of time to make the change so that the points would not end up in holding. At least you will have your bases covered.
