Hi last year I made t-shirts for my trip. This year I am planning on making them again. My shirts from last time held up a couple times in the wash but after the 5th wash or so they started to crack and some images even peeled off! I wonder y this happend? I followed the rules as posted on the board. I did not wash them in vinegar though...I wonder if that is y? I used the transfer papers from walmart...I wonder if that had anything to do with it? Any tips on how to make shirts hold up in the wash? Thanks

This happened to my shirts too! I used Avery and Wilton! This time I'm using Amy's transfers...got my fingers crossed for better luck!

my shirts looked great the 1st couple time we wore them. Now I'm so embarassed for any1 to see them they look horrible! My shirts just took so much time and money to make. I really liked making them though...this year i might just buy them from the disney store. That way I will have them 4 ever...we'll see:)

I'm still wearing my ts from last year (I used HP & Avery brands) and they look great. (However, I should add that I have NOT put them in the dryer - except when I was making them.) Yes, I did use the vinegar wash; however, I've been reading this thread for the past year and have seen other posts where ts were just fine w/o the vinegar wash so I wouldn't guess that's the problem. I have read other threads re poor quality transfer brands (like Wilton) but not sure what brand you bought at Wal-Mart.

My guess would be the quality of the transfers you used ... perhaps combined with putting them in a dryer... but it's just a guess.

My tip - wash them inside out and don't put them in the dryer after they're completed. They'll hold up longer.

It has more to do with the quality of the transfer than in what you did/ or did not do. I have never done the vinegar wash and wash and dry my shirts normally and have had no issues.

But just like you, I have had my fair share of cracked transfers. Over the years I have tried many brands and some cracked after a few washes. I even had one that practically shredded after the first wash. I vowed that I would not stop until I found one that I would no longer have to worry about that. I now have shirts I made about 9 months ago and have been washed lots of times and still look great!

I'm not too worried about the shirts lasting long. I just want to wear them once in the park and don't really care how much longer they last.

I bought cheap shirts (Michael's had shirts 2 for $5, sometimes they even do 5 for $10, just watch their sales ad. I also got some basic Faded Glory shirts at Wal-Mart for $3.50). I also bought my tranfers from Michael's. They were $9.99 for a 5-pack and I used a 50% off coupon so I got them for $5. So I figure I've spent about $5 on each shirt. We honestly have too many clothes as it is so these will be going in the pajama drawer after our trip. The disigns are amazing and we'll always remember them. We'll take pictures of them, etc.

What brand of transfer are you using now that has held up so well?

I am kind of w/ you on this one. I didn't get the best shirts/transfers and for now they look good. I will try to remember to not put them in the dryer to be safe but for now if they don't make it past that week we always need play/sleep shirts.

I consider it a learning experience I already messed up a few and didn't want to mess up on expensive ones. I figure if/when we go back and these don't last I'll spend a little more money on better ones b/c I am less likely to ruin them.

btw, I didn't put them in the dryer since making them because... I DON'T HAVE A DRYER :rotfl2: (and I'm not about to run to the laundromat when a clothes line works just fine). So i do dry mine normally as well - the traditional normal way just like grandma did!
