We are going on the Western cruise next February. My dd-13 and ds-9 want to see Mayan ruins. They chose the ruins over a day at Paradise Beach -- I can hardly believe that they would prefer to do something educational!!:teeth:

Has anyone been to Xcaret? I would like to know if it is worth going to and what the ruins are like there. We are trying to decide between the Tulum excursion and the Xcaret excursion.

Thanks for your help.

I can't speak about Xcaret... I have only been to Tulum, Uxthmal (sp?), and Chichen Itza. I loved them.
Tulum is smaller than the others but I loved it, it was the only one a saw right on the coast, and the beach there is lovely for a quick dip too. I really enjoyed my trip there and I was 16/17 when I went. I am guessing if I liked it at that age your younger DDs will as well! So even though I don't know anything about Xcaret, Tulum was awsome and I would go there rather than a beach (since you will get many chances to sit on the beach on your cruise.) :bounce:

The Ruins at Tulum are awesome...

Although I thoroughly enjoyed Xcaret
there are not much ruins to speak of.

Both are good choices but do not go to Xcaret if it is ruins they want to see.

Thanks for your responses! It sounds like Tulum is the place for us to go to see Mayan ruins. I would appreciate anyone else's opinions too!

I've heard it can be very hot and sunny, with little escape from the sun.

My husband & I went to both Tulum and Xcaret last May w/o kids. Both were excellent! It really depends on how you would like to spend your time. The ruins in Tulum were wonderful...a great way to experience some history and the views are beautiful but very warm . Xcaret is more relaxing and fun. There are so many things to do. You can choose the activities you want to participate in. There is snorkeling, swimming with dolphins (extra charge), folk culture shows, hammocks, relaxing on tubes, etc.
We did the underground river w/lifevests. It was relaxing, and very refreshing. We went on a short tour of some of the ruins there.first. There was a fantastic show at night that highlighted the Mexican culture, but you probably won't be there long enough to see it. We hope to bring our kids back there some day. We think they would love it. Your kids would probably prefer this excursion since there is more to do and a chance to keep cool. Hope this helps.
