Can someone tell me about the underground rivers at Xcaret? I'm wondering if this is a worthwhile excursion. Any information would be really helpful.

This was my favorite area of the park. Supposedly 1/4 mile long. The water is quite cool. I would guess 70 deg but refreshing. Depth varies from 3 feet to 20 feet according to the guards. You float along in semidarkness. Would recommend water shoes as the bottom is crushed rock and sand. Hope to do it again someday

They were very cool...a highlight of our trip! It's a one-way journey, so they bring your stuff to the end of the river so you can pick it up. They were bringing it with a horse and cart when we went.

So would a claustrophobic person have a problem with doing this?

WE went to xcaret a few years ago and really enjoyed it. We were staying at a resort near Cancun so we spent a whole day there. I'm not sure you would get everything you could out of the visit with the time limitaions you will have regarding departure time of the ship. You will also need to be transported from Cozumel to Cancun then put on a bus to xcaret. I think this would involve alot of travel time and not alot of time in the park for enjoyment. The park is beautiful and the cave is a really great experience. From what I remember I think the ceiling of the cave was quite high so I think  someone who is claustrophobic would be okay. There are a few guides with you so I think they could lead you out if you were having problem.

If it were me I would go to Xcaret sometime when I am already vacationing in or around Cancun so I could spend more than a couple of hours there. We spent all day there and still did not see everything. Whatever you choose you will have a great time. Enjoy.

We went to Xcaret 6 years ago on a RCCL excursion - DH, me, DS12, and DD6 (and our first cruise). We have been on 6 subsequent cruises, and I'd say Xcaret still ranks one of the best cruise days we've had to date!!! I'd highly recommend it - and go with a cruise-sponsored trip, as it was a bit complicated transferring to and from. The underground river was really fun and different. There are places where it opens up with natural light, and there are a few electric lights inbetween. I will say my DD was holding onto me for dear life - but she loved it!! This is only one aspect of this wonderful place. There are gorgeous natural pools on the edges of the ocean to swim and snorkel in, and lots of paths to explore. My son did the dolphin swim - at the time, we just signed up on arrival (not sure if this has changed). This experience was really worth it!! I remember we had to leave by 3:00. We could definitely have stayed longer, but would never trade the time we did have there. Go for it!!!!
