xbox vs. xbox 360

Hi! Could someone please help this out of touch mom? I know that the 360 is more advanced with the graphics and such, but what are the other differences between that and the plain xbox? Is the regular xbox so out of date that there is no point in even buying my kids one? Do the 360 games play on the other ones? Thanks!!

the 360 is backwards engineered to play the older Xbox games. the older Xbox can't play the new 360 games. I wouldn't buy your kids an original Xbox. it's like buying them a PS2 at this point.

We have both systems...gotta love having a DH with a video game fetish. DH's favorite feature of the 360 is that it's hooked up to the internet. He's able to download games and play "online" versus other gamers. We also can use it to view our computer photo files, which is kind of neat.

If you're choosing between the two, opt for the 360. Our XBox is only used as a DVD player now, although DD7 is vying for it to be moved into her room.

The 360 has a computer processor that is more powerful than any of the computers in our house...it is really amazing. Another advantage of the internet connection is that whenever you insert a game and turn the system on, the 360 checks to see if there has been an "update" on the game (to fix gliches or whatever), and uploads them instantly if needed.

You can also purchase extra features for some of your games, and upload those extra features via the internet. For example, my dh loves Oblivion. He paid $20 online, and was able to download a castle for his character that fit into his Oblivion game. They will also be releasing a whole new adventure for Oblivion that will be released directly to the internet. Then, you will insert your game into the 360, and download the new adventure (for money, of course). Then, your Oblivion game will then be an entirely new game.

I would get the playstation 3 but it will be hard to get for a while.

Forget the 360, and especially PS3 (which looks doomed anyway - they keep pushing the release date back and the features aren't looking great) - the best new games console is the Nintendo Wii. Everyone is going wild for it, and it was a huge [unexpected] hit at E3 (it's not out here until Dec 8, but I think it may already be out in the US).

The reason is simple - the 360 and PS3 are, for the most part, just graphical updates, but the Wii is the start of the next gen. games (new type of controllers, etc.). Sony are desperately trying to incorporate everything into the PS3, but the predictions for it are not good... there's very little good news being released about PS3 these days. Also, the 360 isn't new anymore.

However, the Wii is brand new and is available at a decent price, compared to the other consoles, and the Wii is backwards compatible right back to the first Nintendo console.

We have an XBox, DS14 wants XBox 360. The one thing I don't like with this system is the lack of choices for games for kids his age. We also have PS2 and there are easily twice as many games for kids/teens.

Wii isnt' out yet.. I think its the 12th or the 19th.

We've had the Xbox since 2001. I think that is around when they were released. The Xbox was pretty new when we got it.

That being said, it is still a solid system. My son isn't interested in the 360. He really doesn't like sports games and that is a good portion of 360 games. The price seems pretty high for what you get as well.

What does your child want? The games are pricier for the 36o but they are not coming out with some greatest hits games which are priced a bit lower. New games for 360 are about sixty dollars. New games for the xbox are about forty.

My son doesn't want a 360, he'd rather have a Ps2 or a Wii. We have a Gamecube as well, but that does't get played as much.

If you're making a choice btw Xbox and Xbox 360, definately go with the 360. Long term, it's going to be the better investment. If you have an HD TV, the games are just amazing to look out. We have several sports games, NCAA Football, Madden and NBA 06 and they are really something to see.

Many of the games are geared toward adult gamers, that's true. Most likely because of the cost of the system. Game companies probably felt that families would be sticking with PS2 and Gamecube, and the 20-35 year old market would be the primary buyers of the Xbox360. They are starting to bring out some more kid friendly titles like Marvel Superhero games, a cute game called Viva Pinata, and I think there's a Sonic the Hedgehog game coming out.

If your kids are younger, I would agree with the poster that suggested looking into the Nintendo Wii. It's less expensive and more kid friendly.

I want the Wii...yes I will be standing in line somewhere before Midnight at a GameStop or Target on Nov 18th.
I did play it the other day in a store....
Have to say pretty darn COOL!

As far as between XBOX & XBOX360....eh...we have the XBOX and don't really play it. At GameStop we can turn it in for 80.00 off a 360 system right now....very tempting to do that to ditch the reg. XBOX.

I play the PS2 more....In fact I would prefer the PS3, but I will not pay that kind of money for a game system....unless I was a millionaire. Even then I might reconsider because I think it is baloney what they charge.

I'm annoyed to no end about the release of the 360 because IMO, it is just a graphical upgrade. That's nice, but we will not be paying a few hundred bucks for a prettier picture. But meantime, we get to listen to the kids whine because they can no longer buy new games for their XBox.

Well YES the 360 is better than the XBOX, BUT you really have to ask yourself what type of gamer your son is. If he is HARDCORE than he would want the latest and greatest(360), and to be honest it will have a long life span. If he is more of CASUAL gamer he can live with a system on it last legs, I see XMAS as the last time you will see new games for it.


The XBOX does have some advantages over the 360.
Price(system itself and GAMES), so you can actually give an XBOX and top five latestest/best games for less than the 360(no game) price alone.
Games, The latest games are still being released for it this xmas and there are THOUSANDS of older titles much more than there are for the 360.

We are looking at buying a system for our DS(8).
So far he only has his Gameboy advance.

I am surprized at the reviews of the Wii on that link.

It says the graphics are not much better than the GameCube, and are far surpassed by both other sytems. In this day and age of Hi-Def. that just seems sub-par. Kind of confuses and concerns me.

What do you guys think about the one-handed controller???

My son has a learning disability, and anythiing that involves coordinated effort of both hands at once would be considered beneficial for him.

Now I am not so sure that the Wii is the way to go.

It is not just a "one handed" controller..it is also a "wireless", which we already have.

OK...the game I got to sample at a Gamestop was some car racing game, which is not my cup of tea. You use both hands like a reg. controller for that game, just like a wireless.

For example with Zelda (which is what I want)...you use it like a sword when you fight. So it is more interactive....certainly more eye hand coordination here.

I imagine when you are walking you have both hands on the controller and hold it like a wireless.

Graphics...smaphics...I think talking about "video graphics" is funny quite frankly.
The good "graphics" are in cut scenes and certain games.
I prefer a GOOD GAME to a bunch of "pretty graphics".
Don't worry about "graphics".

We don't even have a Hi-Def television yet.. So I do know what you mean about the graphics. But, as far as technology and gaming goes, I guess we can hope that we are not buying a system that will very quickly be a dinosaur.

I do like the price on the Wii! The 360 does cost quite a bit more.

Hey, will it play all the old games, or only games made for the new Wii.
I want one that will have games for kids.
