My DH has wanted one or the other for awhile. His job is horrendous right now, so thought I would get him one for Christmas. Not sure which is better, and where I could find the best deal. any help?
Depending on what other "toys" you have in the house. My first thought is PS3 because then you can also play blu-rays through it and use the online functions (play with others) for free. Both systems can stream netflix and other sites. The only things that XBox has IMO to sway it that way would be if he really wants to play Halo (only available on Xbox) or if you do not want to have cable and would like to watch ESPN 3 through the Xbox (can't do through PS3).
ETA: I guess another thing going for the XBox is the new Kinect motion system. More unique concept from the PS3 version which is somewhat a knockoff of Wii (again IMO). There are tons of threads comparing the two and people's thoughts. You might try a quick search.
I personally believe the 360 has better graphics and a good chunk of the games run better on the xBox.
We have both systems in our house. The 360 is used nearly daily. We only use the PS3 for the blu-Ray player... We have also had the systems for nearly the same amount of time. I purchased the 360 for DH for Christmas 3 years ago. While keeping that a secret, he cashed in our CC points for a PS3. He got them about the same time (the PS3 arrived the week before Christmas... and he couldn't figure out why I was so grumpy about it! )
ETA: FWIW... I personally don't like the feel of the PS controllers either. They are small. I think the xBox controllers fit in your hand better.
BAH! the xbox controller is like a spaceship!!!
get a ps3, sooo much better, free online, (3D) bluray, god of war, uncharted, i use my ps3 for EVERYTHING, jukebox, watch netflix etc... its got the move, and im sure that overall the move will be better than the kinect.
check walmart, i know a lot of stores around here still have the black friday bundle, it comes with uncharted 2 and another game.
I think it depends on what games he wants. If he likes shooters, XB is the best, it has Halo, Bioshock, etc. As far as RPGs, it also has the amazing Bioware RPGs Mass Effect (1 and 2), and Dragon Age.
Honestly the only thing I ever found appealing for PS3 was LittleBigPlanet and if Square Enix was going to continue putting Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games on it. Except LittleBigPlanet doesn't warrant a $300 system, and Square seems to be jumping ship on Sony and releasing their games elsewhere so I see no reason to buy.
Plenty of games are on all systems. Technically the PS3 has the better hardware, its newer after all, but if it has nothing fun to play that doesn't mean a thing...
I'd get input on what he wants to play most, then get the system that has the exclusives he wants. Lots of games are released for all platforms, its the exclusives you need to watch for.
