Xbox 360 question

Yes, you need to buy the elite system (120GB) for $299.00 and not the arcade system ($199.00).

Did anyone of you see the 250GB Modern Warfare 2 limited edition ($399.00)....ooh baby.

I thought they quit making the arcade version? I know they quit making one of the models, just assumed it was the basic intro-level one.

edit: my kids would know right off the bat. They discontinued the 60GB version but kept the arcade and elite. I wonder why they did that?

No, they quit making the Pro (60 gig) version, though I keep forgetting that and thinking they got rid of the Arcade.

Mystery Machine, if we hadn't just upraded to the Elite fairly recently I would totally be getting that Modern Warfare bundle! I'd love to have that much space on the hard drive!

They aren't going to stop making the arcade version because a lot of people who pick up a 2nd system (like when ours was in route to Texas for the 3 rings of death), and don't necessarily need a 2nd hard drive.

Hubby has since picked up a 2nd hard drive, but the 2nd console he bought, he did buy the arcade version. Last year, Xbox was also selling the 20 GB hard drives for $20 to anyone who'd purchased the arcade version during a specific period of time. It was sometime around the holidays. I think we qualified, but never took advantage of it.

EDIT: and I'm sure MS loves the idea of enticing some into buying an Xbox with the lower priced starter system (even if everything one needs to start isn't included). I'd bet a lot of mothers out there bite on that price and find out the facts later on. Are they going to return it, or buy a hard drive after the kid unwrapped it on Xmas morning?

Ours is on VACATION in Texas :worship:
A/K/A the red ring of death (repair or replacement.)
BY the way, its the second time, and last year they shipped us the one we just had to send back for the same thing...NIGHTMARE! (yes, we have cooler and Yes he plays A LOT!)

I am on NO BUY STATUS for anything XBOX Holiday gifting this year, just think the WHOLE system STINKS but DS LOVES the thing...thus....we're waiting AGAIN! So far, three weeks.....................

Now see, it is posts like yours that scare me. I was chatting with the Gamestop employee over the RROD and he was telling me that anything made after Oct of 08 is free from the RROD.

Uh-huh.

I heard that as well, but I think there are particular serial numbers that you have to check for, since there were many sold after that time which had been manufactured before that. I don't know for sure, though. Even then I dont think it completely solved the problem, but supposedly it did reduce it.

We've been lucky, I guess. We had a Pro and an Elite plus 4 controllers and haven't had problems so far. (knock wood!) I don't know why some people have so many problems and others don't - we do play for hours at a time so I'm sort of surprised ours hasn't overheated.

We just bought an XBOX 360 Elite for my 12 year old son for Christmas! I know nothing about them, but my son really wanted one (got a Wii last year and loves it but now wants an XBOX) so we decided to get it! I know he is going to be super excited because he has no idea he is getting it! :)

I don't know about this. The one we sent back was purchased a few years back. The 2nd one we bought during that period hasn't had any problems with it yet, so I can't comment on that.

I've also not had any problems with the controllers this generation, but the original Xbox the controllers kept breaking left and right. While I know my family has done the yank it thing to get the controller detached from the system (they were wired controllers back then), they were doing the same thing with the PS2, original Playstation, Nintendos all the way back (to before the Wavebird for sure), the Sega systems etc..... yet, we never had the problem with any of them.

Just wanted to clarify for future purchasers in case I was not clear....Xbox360

The original system we used without issue for about a year...07 manufactured. Then it did the red ring of death. Called Microsoft and warranty was still good and they extended because of that class action suit that was filed against them( which basically said they knew of issue and rolled it out anyway)
When they shipped us back our unit, at least we thought it was our unit, but repaired.(by the way LONG wait, VERY long, we're in NE and I think they take longer here!)...we again used it without issue, I think this time about another year. Then it again got red ring of death.
When I called THIS time, was told to confirm serial number, and since I had all original paperwork, I realized, and noticed that the unit was NOT our original, it was actually manufactured in 2006; OLDER than our original. I was told it did not matter (they sent us a replacement!)and they again took it back to repair or replace.......we are waiting at this point, it has been about 3 weeks, I think.........
What annoys me is the $50 we spent (online that we can't use, which will likely be 3-4 mos again) and the extra $$$ we spent for updates/stuff...In the meantime, was told the warranty goes to my ORIGINAL purchase date, NOT the date they send it back to us repaired/replaced, which is IMHO A JOKE!
I think they KNEW and KNOW of the glitches that still continue, just GOOGLE it..and THAT is just plain wrong.
So, Like I said, I will not purchase another game, accessory or put any of MY $$ into the system again.
The ds disagrees and still enjoys and is on the pre-buy list at Gamestop for two newer games, forgot names, think one rolls out 11/17th, assasins creed???
I just wonder if a certain area of the country got the "issue ones" and WHY oh WHY does it take so long when others in south and west get them back in like 2 weeks total, talk about FRUSTRATING....and all the time, packaging, delivering to UPS, etc etc....just not right for a company that size to not have worked this all out efficiently!

Uh-oh! I have never heard of the red ring of death issue. Last year I bought DH an xbox 360 for Christmas (not the arcade version, the regular one that was $300). How do I find out if his is likely to get red ring of death? The reason I ask is because he wants to get xbox live and Halo 3 this year for Christmas, and I need to know if I should buy a cooler too. I would hate for it to break right after I get him a bunch of Christmas gifts that require the xbox 360 to work properly.

If it is an XBOX360, you could get the RROD. Supposedly a system made after Oct 08 is better. I think the Gamestop employee said you could see a date of manufacture on the game system or a code, I think. It shouldn't break right away and it is a "hit and miss" thing. You can go on YOUTUBE and see the detailed info with the manufacturer's defect.

Interestingly the PS3 can have the "Yellow Ring of Death".

I have heard you have to pay for the repair on the PS3, so that right now that makes me steer clear of that system.

Another thing to keep in mind is that it can actually void your warranty if you use some of the coolers that are available. I know that there was one that plugged in to the 360 that was blamed in some cases for the RRoD. They changed it and it doesn't plug in to the XBox any longer, but I think they will still void the warranty if they know you used it. So that's something to check into if you are getting a cooler. Actually, that's something to consider with any third party products - you should always check to be sure that it won't void your warranty (or get you banned from Live) to use whatever it is before you get it.

I have heard of the PS3, 360 and Wii all having problems. I don't think there is a console that doesn't have the occasional problem. I thankfully haven't had trouble with any of mine (yet) but I know people who have had problems with all of them. Microsoft has been very good about repairing/replacing consoles with the RRoD, so I wouldn't let the possiblity of that stop me from getting it. Also, even though lots of people have experienced the RRoD, there are lots of people who haven't.
