I am also in a 10 mo. position at our local school district. For me, I would love the chance to work through the summer!
But if you feel you need to stay where you are for your son, then stay. They don't stay young for long!:sunny:

I would take the job. There are many scholarships to apply for if you want to delve into that. Also the income $$$ you would make over the time period (middle school thru high school) would most likely outweigh scholarship money. Although I do not know how much the scholarship is for. How much? Can't be a full scholarship and there is no guarentee he would get it anyway.

If he want to go to med school he needs to hit the ACT or SAT top scorers (1%) anyway and that will give you a FULL scholarship usually.

If you took the new job and wanted to go back in 4 years would that be possible? So much can happen in 4 years, I think the new job sounds like a winner(40 hours anyway you want it would be fantastic)

I agree. I think you should take the new job.

Do you want to give up your summers off?

If you figure out the number of hours you work now (over the year) and the hours you would work in a 12 month position are you really making more money?

Does the vactaion time increase with the new job?

If you do take the position your name would still be known in the high school so it shouldn't change his chances for a scholarship if he gets the grades.

Would you miss the contact with the students? You would be pushing numbers all day in the new job.

Just some thoughts I had while reading your post.

Do you need the extra cash and is advancement that important to you? You sound very satisfied in your present job. Are you willing to give up that satisfaction for more money, chance for advancement and not working with the kids?

I don't know your age but I know that as I get older, the amount of money I make at my position and the chances of advancement don't excite me near as much as it would have when I was in my 20's or 30's. I much prefer to be happier in my work and make a little less, than to make more and hate what I do.

I'm not saying you'd hate your new job, I'm just saying these are things to consider.

I'd have to agree with jipsy. I would weigh all the pros and cons of yur current job vs. the new position. And only oyu can decide what are pros and cons. Tosome folks, only working 10 months of the year may be a con. Personally, I would consider that BIG pro!!!!!! But, I digress...;)

In any event, other then the 1 "buster" you have at your current job, are you generally happy? Do you feel like oyu make a difference in the kids lives? Is making that differenec important to you? In your new job would you have that same sense of satisfaction and "making a difference"?

There is more to a job than money. Remember, it's the place where you spend a lot of time. You want to be happy there.

I went from a 12 month to a 10 month position.

I found out even though I was making less money in the 10 month position, I had to pay out care for my kids when I was working in the summer.

I wound having to do three jobs to take care of the camp costs!

NOT WORTH IT!

So now I work 10 month and am very poor right now! I love being off with them, and being able to do whatever.

I am thankful for Ebay, because that is what gets me through!

I want to add a slightly different slant here. It can be difficult for a student to be at the same school as a parent. The other students can really give him or her a hard time. My friends' children did not want them to teach at their schools.

At that age kids just hate to be different in any way. Being singled out as "so and so"s child can be hard as a teenager. I know that's not rational, but it is often true.

None of us can foresee exactly what is going to happen in the future. I guess the best advice I would give you is to just go with your gut instinct - that usually works best.
