do you have an old sports jacket, or suit jacket, or do you have older sons or cousins that might have an old suit for him to wear.

Slick his hair down with gel to the side.

The grinch movie is about things not quite right or out of whack, but it is suppose to be the loveable story.

My daughter is in 8th grade and she has to dress up in army fatigues. She is devestated, but they are singing "I"ll be home for christmas". They teacher thought it would be a good idea to have a girl representing the army.

Ya teachers, gotta luv them. (Hardest job in the world)!

I would not aim for replicating the movie or tv version. Just have him wear his best clothes, make a real official looking sash and badge out of paper or cloth, and put a top hat on him. Think simple!

Do you really mean 4 hours??? I can't imagine a play in a school lasting that long. If that's the case, I hope it is something pretty darn comfy!!!

Great idea, quick, simple, and to the point.

I wonder if the teacher waited so long to keep the parents from going all out on the costumes. As a parent who can't sew, I'd love this idea.

4 hours is a long time. Are the doing the play several times during the course of the day?

I too thought top hat right away. You can usually buy plastic ones at the party store. Don't stress, teachers don't really expect elaborate costumes for these things.

I think vest, jacket, glasses, hat, maybe a pillow belly. Skip the glasses if you can't find them.

A black top hat from a party store, a pair of fake round glasses (can get them at party store too), black dress pants, dress shoes, a colorful vest (hardest part to find, IMO, I'd hunt at some thrift stores asap!) a dress shirt that matches the vest and a large pin (homemade) that says "Mayor" on it. Slick his hair back with gel. I think that will make an awesome costume and it's a lot easier costume to come up with than the grinch, lol. I really feel for that kid's mom, lol.

isyne4u and disneyjunkie - they are doing the play 3 different times. Inviting all the younger grades up to the play. Then they are making ornaments, books, etc. with all the students. Their classroom is going to be decorated The Grinch. It is a GREAT idea. We are donating an inflatable Grinch (the 8 Foot one) and we were lucky when the movie at the theatre was over a friend gave me the banner.

I was able to get out this morning and thought I would let him wear his dads blue sports coat, his own green shirt underneath, and I bought a red and white tree skirt to use as the cape. Then I thought I would make him a badge that says Mayor off of my computer. I will borrow some gel from my father in law to do his hair.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I got up this morning and ran to the store to get the tree skirt. We are suppose to get 3 inches of ice, then sleet and then 1-3 inches of snow on top of that at sundown, so I dont think I will be going very far for a while.

I hope I did not affend anyone by this thread, because I absolutely love this teacher. I am just one of those mothers, that if they are going to do something special at the school, I like to do it to the best of my ability. My DS is overweight and is very self-consicous (sp) about the way he looks. So on things like this, I like to do my best for him so that he does not feel bad, like the worst costume. LOL.

Whew!! Glad to know that it is three different plays. I thought one 4 hour play was a bit excessive!! Glad things are working out for you and him. As a teacher i'm not offended by anything that you have said. I know there are times when I send out things that are short notice, so I don't think any one was offended!! Post pix when you are done!!
