X-mas or Christmas

The only thing that takes the "Christ" out of Christmas is people's attitude. Christmas is what you make it.

Awwwhhhh! I love that! I'd say that that statement alone would sooner change my mind than any of these other facts that people are throwing around... :sad2:

I prefer X-MESS but that's just me ;)

Speaking of abbrevations for Christ, I have seen the letters "ihs" which I think is an ancient Greek abbreivation for Christ. I've seen it on crosses, on priests' vestements and so on

but I've never seen anyone write it. Why is that?

It is an ancient abbreviation of the name Jesus, taken from the first three letters used to write the name in Greek. Consider it medieval shorthand and then considering modern day shorthand, think about how often we see that. It has simply fallen out of use, aside from ecclesiastical artwork.

I always write "Christmas", that was INSTILLED from Catholic School learning. However reading "Xmas" dont bother me it all!!!!! :confused3

i use X-Mas all the time...
DH's Grandparents (full catholics) wont ever use any variation... they must say Christmas.. they keep "Christ" in Christmas...

I'm tired of Christians trying to force themselves down everyone's throat. I've always been a very religous person. I used be a "bible quizzer" and all that stuff, but I've never felt the need to go around making other people feel silly for saying things like "Xmas" or "The Holiday Season". I mean, to me Holiday Season is the best term, being as we're not JUST celebrating Christ's birth, but a whole plethora of other cultural Holidays.

Sheesh...some people need to go visit Christmas around the World at Epcot again!

Nice one.. you should tell that to someone I know who thinks she is the "perfect Christian" and preaches to all and sundy about what is right and what is wong.. how it says in the bible this and it says in the bible that.. Don't get me started on other stuff... she just has to sell it to everyone. Even when she met her natural family (she was adopted) she spent the night staying with her half sister and family and she just had to ask them about their religion or lack of it. She came home oh so happy.. telling me how she had asked them what their beliefs were and how she "preached the word" to them and how she left with some little books of interesting reading.

How to put a person off.. honestly.. that would put me off straight away.. nothing worse than someone you hardly know trying to sell you their religion or political beliefs.

I only say Christmas, nothing religious about my reasons, I just don't like X-mas. In general, I'm not a big fan of the letter X. ;)

Indeed, according to Wikipedia the "X" is an abbreviation for the Greek word for "Christ" which starts with an "X" and "Xp" and "Xt" have been used as abbreviations for "Christ" for almost 1,000 years.

Are we Greek or speak Greek?

Keep Christ in Christmas
