We took a big vacation this summer, and my DH and I sort of agreed to no more big vacations for two years. Well, when I really think hard about it, I want to go next summer. The reason: my DS13 will be entering high school next year, and will be in the band. The band goes on a very big trip every two years or so. (Last year they went to Hawaii, and this year they are marching in the Rose Parade.) We're talking $2000+ that we'd need to either fund raise or cough up for our son to go on trips when he's involved in band. That will take up our vacation money. Plus, if they go somewhere really cool, we'll want to go as "tag-alongs", so that will be our vacation. See where I'm headed? It looks like once he starts H.S., our vacations might be band trips.

This might be our last "hurrah" at Disney with him at least.

I'm struggling with going to Disney next summer, or saving the money to put towards the H.S. trips, home repairs, and bulking up our emergency fund.:confused3 I feel like the latter three are the more responsible things to do...but I'm not sure I want to be responsible right now!;)

I would have a talk with my DH and talk to him about the possibility of next summer. If your son is going into HS, you only have a few years left of the possibility of big family vacations before he will be going off on his own. Maybe you can crunch some numbers :teacher: and figure out a way to save money as well as be able to go.

We did our last big vacation last summer when DD turned 14. She was graduating 8th grade, about to go to high school. I knew this would be our last time to pull out all the stops with her. Once they start HS it's band camp, dance camp, summer jobs, friends, etc. It's very hard to get a teen girl to give up her summer.

So last summer we hitched up the RV and took off for the west coast--6000 miles in 2 months. There were times she was ready to kill one of us, I believe, but we really had a good time. I expect she'll want to do that with her kids in the future.

We also promised her we'd never make her do that again:laughing:

This past summer we hitched up the RV again, but this time we only went for a week in Florida and we took her BFF with us:thumbsup2
