WWYD-Private vs. Public School

Some of you have let one poster get under your skin and have not only put yourself in danger of getting points but have insulted a few people that might just be on your side. Is it worth it?

As for the anti-military comments, I don't agree in any way with those either. However, I defend the poster's right to say them as vicious as they are. They are crass and uncalled for but unfortunately some people feel that way.

I personally find the poster hilarious.

While as "honorable" as some may think military life is, there is no way I would EVER allow my child to sign up for the military. I would rather sell my soul than allow them to do something so senseless and meaningless.:sad2:

I think "National Guard" should be by state. And lets point out that when Katrina hit, Fema and National Guard were slow to respond. Those areas are still in shambles. Imagine if half of the insurgents that are in Iraq or Afghanistan where down there right now helping? The impact would be phenomenal. Imagine if the other half helped "defend" woman in Iraq and Africa?

The area is not still in shambles. Absentee landlords are responsible for the areas that are still a mess. They are scattered across the US.

For what I hope is the last time:
THE REASON IT TOOK SO LONG FOR THE FEDS-NAT'L GUARD,FEMA AND EVERY OTHER DANG GROUP TO RESPOND WAS BECAUSE OUR GOVERNOR TOLD THEM TO STAY OUT THAT WE COULD HANDLE IT OURSELVES. SHE WAS THE BIGGEST ******* EVER TO RULE THE STATE. NEW ORLEANS MAYOR NAGIN IS RUNNER UP FOR LOUISIANA'S BIGGEST LOSER.THEY ARE THE REASON FOR THE SLOW RESPONSE.
THE ARMED FORCES AND NATIONAL GUARD WHO CAME INTO NEW ORLEANS SAVED THOUSANDS OF LIVES AND WE WILL ALWAYS BE GRATEFUL! THEY DID A PHENOMENAL JOB! THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!!

WOW Did this thread get hijacked I am a big proponent of private schools. I went to an all girls private Catholic school. While not a great student a major well rounded individual that many of my friends who went to public schools and graduated with honors. One of the things to think about with private v public for kindergarten is where is your child going to go if the public kindergarten us half day

:thumbsup2
Well said. This isn't to insult ANYONE but there is a "type/class". Kids who have families that are well educated or well off very, very rarely go to the military If you want to go to school, that's what you do. Loans don't mean much because you can push them off for 5 years after you graduate. Most "military" families...i'll keep my mouth shut.:scared:

Loans don't mean much? :scared1: Well educated people rarely go into the military? Are you aware that West Point is a premier college? Look as a former high school teacher, I realize military recruiters can be quite pushy if they're allowed to be. Fortunately, we had an administrator who didn't let them run the show when they visited the school (and believe me, if they could they would be at the school once a week). However, your comments regarding military families and military as a career are INSANE.

Plus, who do you think defends this country and contributes greatly to its functioning? And before you judge soldiers as assassins, keep in mind that soldiers are not the ones who decided to go to Iraq. Since just about every man in this country somehow served during WWII and was drafted for the Vietnam War, are they second class assassins too? Seriously, you sound like my friends whose parents hate the military and whose dad got a note to stay out of Vietnam. They also wouldn't allow their own children to become firefighters or policemen...but don't hesitate to call 911 when necessary.

BTW, I have no family serving in the military right now and I do think there are problems. I am not taking your comments personally. But from one public high school teacher to another - I find your comments unprofessional, dangerous, naive, snobbish and out of touch.

Thank you for telling me the last 23 years of both my and DH's lives have been senseless and meaningless! I wasn't aware of that. I thought it was full and meaningful both professionally and personally. I guess I just needed you to straighten me out.

I don't support the military and that's my GOD given right as a person. It doesn't make me ignorant, it my opinion and last time I checked everyone is entitled to that. No one is fighting for my freedom nor am I asking them to. Freedom is a hoax in this country. You're as free as the government allows you to be.

WOW! I have lived in the middle east and experienced a lot of things over there. You do have freedom, you just take it for granted.

My husband grew up in a household that hated the military and didn't want him to join. Well, guess what! He joined the military. He even went to USNA. He is currently a reservist and has enjoy and learned a lot from the military.

It is odd. I never said I hated this country. I just don't like the military and those who can't see past it and work toward growing vs. destroying. I really wonder how things would be if people no longer signed up and JUST SAID NO! If families pushed their kids to stay in college and find a different path. The government knows that throwing money at people who can't stick it through college and thus have limited future resources will guarantee a full military. THIS IS NOT to say that some people don't do it for love. I just don't understand why.

You really need to go to a local military base and talk to the men and women in uniform. You have the wrong idea about them.

No I don't. A very close friend of mine was enlisted in the Marines served his time and came home. Pieces of metal throughout his groin area. First thing he said. I screwed up. It was a waste of a year of my life for nothing. I should have been home here with my family and friends. This is a guy who was so pro military and all that noise. He lost 5 friends there and has since pulled himself out and has vowed NEVER to go back no matter what.

That sucks but I think a lot of people (including those that join the military) do not recognize the possible realities. I remember before 9/11 there were a ton of enlistees who had finished college and were now offended that they had to serve.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I just wanted to say to the OP that you have to do what's right for your child, your family. You know your child better than anyone else.

I am a big believer in Catholic education. My daughter goes to a Catholic elementary school and we pay almost 4 times what you pay. ($2500 doesn't seem so bad! ;) )

I think she's getting THE BEST education possible for our area. I want her to excell and succeed and I think by giving her the education I am, she will.

Whatever you decide, good luck to you. :thumbsup2

That is very sad but it's possible that the military wasn't right for HIM. That doesn't mean that it isn't right for others.

I try to imagine how I would feel if DS decided to join the military. I'm sure that I'd have a lot of feelings but I'd only let him see my pride and support. It's his life and he has to decide what's best for him.

wow are you truly that ignorant about the military? You REALLY have no idea do you?

My brother joined the military AFTER law school, he is a proud officer in the Navy and I couldnt be more proud of him. He is set to retire this year and not once has he ever been an "Assasin" You seriously need to look into something you claim to hate so vehemently before you go around casting stones!

Many of the men in my family have been the military and they all served proudly. My Grandfather was in the honour Guard at the White House, my Father is the only chaplain in history who served as an officer for both the US and Canadian forces, another brother was in the coast guard. Ooopps, saving lives rescuing poor people that were lost at sea. Guess that isnt too important is it? :confused3 and certainly not honourable.

What was the line from a few good men? "you sleep under the blanket of protection I provide"

You can deny it all you want it doesnt change the truth of the matter. Truth is not an opinion.

and your opinion is NOT a God given right, if it were there wouldnt be Countries all over who FIGHT for that right.

ETA: as for the OP only you can decide whats right. I have been very frustrated with our public school lately. They dont seem to be addressing a bully situation. However, if I were to homeschool they would be missing out on a lot of therapies that the school provides. So its up to you. Only you know where your child will thrive. Best of luck to you and sorry to hijack your thread!

Can we PLEASE get back to the OP - Private vs. Pulbic School???

Just have to jump in to say that

Good or bad
Right or wrong
Every system and school will be different
Every child and family will be different ....

Bottom line? We're looking into COLLEGES now and they're going to be wayyy more costly than we ever dreamed possible. :scared1:
Truly, we knew alot about the costs but we are still SHOCKED. :scared1:

So i agree with those who said it's better to save for college, IF you can find a public school that is good. It doesn't even have to be GREAT because as others have said you'll be ASTOUNDED to see the cost of college. We are anyway.
We've been saving since our kids were born, made some good investments too, but it still won't be enough. Even with scholarships. So to the loan office we will be going. We'd considered private schools years ago but super glad we didn't go that route. If we had there'd be no way our kids could go to college. Even with them helping alot, and we / they intend to do just that. :goodvibes

Bottom line, glad our public schools are mostly good, because college may be the death of us financially!!! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Exactly and well said.
Regardless how great the Private school or how smarl little Johnny may be, IT WON'T REALLY MATTER beyond *feeling good* about it now.

As many have said, you MUST think and plan ahead, way beyond these early school years! They are NOT that important!! (unless your public schools are truly deplorable)
Once again :) some of you WILL remember this thread years from now and wish you'd spent a little less time and a lot less money obsessing over the primary and high school years!!!

I'm amused by the notion that moving to an area because the schools are good is also somehow elitist. We were moving anyway so why would we not make sure that we were in a good district? I fall in the camp of preferring to save the money for college or other needs if at all possible.

Of course, if you aren't moving and live in an area with bad public schools that's a whole other situation. But living where the schools are good if at all possible is in no way elitist IMO.

Good points and ITA.

DH did private and public and I was a straight public school student.

DH learned more at the well ranked public school as compared to the elitist private boarding schools he was sent to.

He did a private high school and he absoleutely hated it! The private high school did not prepare him for college and what he did learn was so "devoid of truth". Yes, that is an actual quote from him.

I've heard that many times. Many (MOST?) of the privates do not have the funding to have most of the programs available on the public school level.

A friend just picked up the class directories of available classes from both the local public and catholic high schools. The public schools directory is AT LEAST 3 X as thick as the private school's, in other words the public school has 3X the offerings in every area of study and special needs available to the students.

Also unfortunately, the *real world* will be a far cry from some of the sheltered privates.

Oh if only we could go with our kids all through life, sheltering them from everything and making sure they were known to be the best and the only best!!

  :scared:

And sadly, years from now I guarantee you that some WILL remember this thread and especially, posts like mine....
No one thinks it'll happen to them....

:)

As I said earlier in this thread, years from now some of us will remember this thread and will really wish we'd done things differently.

(flammmmmme away but you WILL remember this discussion some day when you're trying to get your kids tuition paid!!! GUARANTEED.)[/B]

Once again :) some of you WILL remember this thread years from now and wish you'd spent a little less time and a lot less money obsessing over the primary and high school years!!!

Would you give it a rest already with the "one day you'll remember this thread?!" We got the point already.

And FWIW, so what if I want the best for my child? Where's the problem in that? I get your opinion is that public school is better than private (at this point who doesn't?), but you don't live where I do so you can't know why I made the choices I made. Also FWIW, I only have one child, so I only have one to worry about.
