WWYD -- need help making a job decision

Wow, pretty big consensus for B! My husband and friends are in agreement with that too.

momtocutestdogever (mtcde for short ), you really make a good point! I should say that I am in a constant search for Job C -- my degree is in secondary ed so what I want to do is teach in a public school. There's just nothing around here, so I am making do with these jobs until I find a teaching job. Neither Job A or B are ones I can see myself making a career of. I got hired at both jobs the same week and they were both just supposed to be part time. When A went full-time I went ahead and accepted and just took a single client with B -- they've been asking me to take on more, but I just don't have the energy to work a full time job and then taking on more clients. So I do believe the work is there with this clinic. Whether they can have me working the 25 hours is another matter. Even if I'm not, we're still okay financially.

he-he - you know which one is better. You just need people to point out the obvious. It's tough leaving one to go to the other. Go ahead - take the plunge! (or....go ahead, cut the ties to "A"!)

Good luck!

job b, no question. best of luck with whatever you decide to do :)

I do see which one is better. It is definitely fear holding me back, plus the fact that I have the best coworkers I've ever had!

One of my best friends last night had an interesting approach. She said, "You can't put in your 2 weeks notice." My reaction was just to drop my jaw and get upset, saying "Why on earth not??"

Then she asked if I felt relief or disappointment.... okay, well I felt confusion, but I got the point she was trying to make. I know what the right answer is, but I don't want to have to go in and actually do it. Just need to put on my big girl panties and do it.

Job B. Move forward with your life and remember that when you give your two week's notice, if your current employer gives you any grief about leaving, keep in mind that they'd think nothing of terminating you if your salary impacted their bottom line. So don't let your current employer make it personal. Keep it professional and positive. You have to think of yourself as a business and run your business in the best possible interest for your business.

The second job offers better business opportunities. Not just salary, but an enhanced well-being with more time off and the chance to make contacts where you can continue to improve your practice. The second job will likely value your skills more, therefore it's just good business sense to explore an opportunity that will likely profit you in the future.

If you're worried about insecurity about your hours on the new job, don't. You already said that you don't depend on that job for money; your husband makes enough to support you guys.

I say go for it. Give notice today and get on with your life. And CONGRATULATIONS!

Not sure where you live, but I can give you some insights into the "B" job based on those positions here in NE PA....

1) Flexible scheduling and good pay rate...generally $30/hr.
2) Never short on clients to serve....demand for services far exceeds number of professionals to provide the services.
3) Mix of cases with varying degree of difficulty....there is generally about 25% of any given caseload that is extremely difficult to manage, others are wonderfully rewarding.
4) PAPERWORK!!! Expect alot of it and a demand for quality.

I personally have done it. I know I will never truly face unemployment because there is always jobs available. However, it would not be my first choice. I'm lucky to have established myself in private practice, so that is now my plan "B" in the event I ever get laid off from my FT job.

I like "B", but I'd be hesitant. "Flexible hours" can quickly become "flexible" in terms of you being available for them. It can be a double edged sword. You may get stuck working hours you don't want.

I don't know. I would definitely get everything in writing, probably including your base hours. That's all I can think of for now.

Well I put in my notice yesterday. I don't know why it was as hard for me as it was -- people do it all the time and she's been there 18 years, so she's been through it herself a time or two. I was warned, though, that my last week could be extremely rough with her. I hope not. If she's too nasty about it, I'll just walk out, so I'm spending the rest of this week getting everything in order to make it as smooth as possible for the next person.

Thanks for the update. I hope your last 2 weeks go well and that the new job is smooth sailing. :boat:

If she starts anything in the next two weeks, tell her matter of factly that you wanted to be an adult about giving notice, but since she doesn't appreciate it, you have no other choice but to leave. Then, walk out the door.

Congratulations on making this decision!
