I just got a call from someone I used to work with about a job. His wife owns a florist shop, and they need someone to be their Marketing Coordinator, and he thought of me.
Now, I used to do admin work when I worked with him (Not for him directly, but sometimes I would help him out, etc.) and he thinks this may work. I also have an event planning business, so I think he also wants to tie that in somehow..... But truthfully, other than for my own business, I have no marketing experience at all.
The Marketing Coordinator position would entale me doing email marketing, keeping track of their web sites, and also going into businesses and promoting them. So far thats all I've gotten from him - we are supposed to meet later this week to go over more.
They are not planning on giving me an hourly salary, but commission on whatever is made that I'm involved with. Up to 15K I would get 15% and up to 20K I'd get 20%.

My questions are: How many hours do you think this would be for me? I have my event planning business, a part time job, kids, a house, etc. What do you think of the fact that hes just offering me commision? Is that normal?

TIA

I would pass on that. Sounds like a whole lot of work for no pay.

My thoughts exactly. How would you prove what was a result of your work? Anything marketing related does take time from what I heard from the marketing people talking where I used to work.

I dunno... Marketing Coordinator doesn't sound like a commissioned position...

Your event planning experience would probably translate well to marketing. You could try to negotiate (hours, compensation, duties) and it's an excellent idea to clarify what your duties are and what his expectations are. If you're interested.

Not a fan of commission only personally. How do they plan to figure out exactly what $$ is brought it by you and what isn't? Seems like it may be a blurry line.

Plus some of the duties like maintaining a website is not tied to commission. So you would be working for free.

I'm thinking that it would be based on new clients that I bring in for them, including repeat business.

But I mean - how many flowers do you have to sell to reach $15K?!? I would be doing all this work, hours and hours of work, and not get paid for months - at least thats what I'm thinking.

I think when I meet with them, I'll tell them that I'm interested in it, and would love to do a great job for them, but it would have to be a saloried (sp?) position, with a smaller commission on top from the clients I bring in for them.

I already told DH about it, and he doesn't like it at all. He even went as far as to say that he wants to come to the meeting with me. I said no way to the one - I can't handle myself - but I'm going to be really causion with this.

Thanks for the imput guys!!!

Good luck! Maybe after talking to them you can come up with something that will work for both of you. Just sounds like you need more info.

Yeah thanks - I'm actually kind of excited about it - but I'm not going to bust my butt for free, KWIM. I have far many better things to do than promote someone elses business without compensation!!!!

As long as they are willing to pay me hourly - part time of course - I'd me willing to do it - especially if I can promote my own business at the same time.

Thanks again for everyones posts!
