I think what the PP's were confused about, is that poster made it seem like because the person was shopping at an ethnic food store, they couldn't afford to lose the $10. As if somehow shopping at an ethnic food store makes you poor. I'm hoping that isn't what she meant, but that's how I read it.

That is how I read it too, I am hoping I am wrong though.

I would just call the store an explain. The store may just tell you that it was their fault, don't worry about it.

Did I need more caffeine this morning? LOL:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I would love to return the item but the fact is I would be afraid that I would be accused of stealing the items in the first place.

Why wold you return to pay for it. When things like this happen they are just good luck like finding $10 on the ground. Are you going to stand there and ask people if they dropped it? Just keep it cal it good luck.

If a company over charged you do you think they would seek you out for a refund?

Though I'm a horrible, wretched, evil person so don't listen to me.

I won't listen to you and yes I do think you are not a nice person. But you have to sleep with your conscience not me.

And yes I have been given a refund when a company finds they have overcharged me.

If I find money I do try to find the owner.

I would call the store and offer to pay for it however they would like, over the phone with credit or the next time I go in.

Thankfully MOST people are not like you and do do the right thing. Hopefully you are teaching your child better than you have been taught.

I would return it because of the idea of "what goes around comes around." I've certainly made monetary mistakes at jobs before when I was a cashier and had money taken out of my check when the receipts didn't add up right. I would have been very grateful if someone returned to the store to pay for the items.

I would call the store and pay for it next time I was in. I wouldn't make a special trip. I will tell you a story though....My DSis and I were buying 2 identical rugs at a discount carpet store. The cashier made a mistake and only charged us for 1. My DSis tried to correct him and told him he was charging us the wrong price. He interrupted her, got all huffy and started yelling at us that he knows what he's doing and that's the price. My DSis politely thanked him and we got two rugs for the price of one. I still laugh about it.

We had the same thing happen at a huge hardware store. We were doing a full house remodel and were checking out with about 4000 worth of items and two of the things we were buying were identical ceiling fans and the cashier rang one up and we handed her the other one and she said no I got it and I said but we have two she replied back no I got it so I said okay and brought home my 2 for 1 ceiling fans

I see it as stealing since I didn't pay for it and took it home with me.

I think finding a 10.00 dollar bill is totally different

I would call the store, ask for the manager and say that my chattiness disrupted the cashier and how would they like me to pay for the item?

Yes, I am one of those talky customers. I like to know how my cashiers are doing.

I'd call the store first too. You got home before you discovered the item, so maybe they would let you pay for it over the phone.

In the case where the store makes the mistake and doesn't charge you, or refuses to charge you the correct price, well then that's on them.

Two short stories. I was broke and wanted to buy a Christmas tree from my local big box store. I picked out the cheapest tree but it rang up $40.00 more at the register, I argued the point, then went back to the display and found a tree that had the same price as the previous tree had rung up for. I took it back to the same cashier, who rang it up for $40.00 less. When I pointed out to her that the tree should be xxx price she just smiled at me and said ":Merry Christmas Hun" I still have that tree.

A few times I left Target and found out that I had cosmetic items under my purse when I left the store. So I'd walk back in to pay for them. I try not to put them on the front of the cart anymore so that doesn't happen again. ;)

What would you do in this scenario...

You go shopping and buy a bunch of stuff. The cashier is pretty chatty, so the two of you are talking while she rings everything up, and neither of you is really paying much attention.

You get home and realize that she did not charge you for an item. Let's assume the item cost more than $25 and the store is within 20 mins of your home/work.

This is why I always check my receipt before I leave the parking lot. In the event the cashier has left something out of my bag, or if they neglected to charge me for something.

There have been times where an item was not checked out and I have gone back into the store to pay for it, but that was when I was still in the parking lot.

I am with the others that say call the store-that is probably what I would do. They may just say "don't worry about it".

That has happened to me once before as well.

Another time my 4 year old son stuffed a tiny bear in his jacket pocket and when we got outside he took it out with a big smile on his face....that smile didn't last too long once I made him go back in the store and return it.

Go back.

I did a major goof a couple years ago. My grocery store was mad busy so I started bagging my own items. The cashier and I got caught up in chatting and she thanked me and sent me on my way.

I packed up, got in my car and drove off. I got about 1/4 mile away and realized I hadn't paid for my groceries (over $100 worth). I slammed on my brakes and went back. I could have easily kept going, but it wasn't the right thing to do.

Will you be able to look at the item with a clear conscience? You feel better if you call and talk to a manager about the situation.

LOL, that happened to me once, my dd wasn't walking yet and was in the stroller, we were in Marshalls and I was looking at the kids shoes for her.
we leave the store, and I look in her carriage and she is holding onto a pair of kids shoes, she must have swiped them off the rack when I wasn't looking! LOL
I took them right back in, they laughed.

that is kind of funny, that poor cashier must have been :scared1:
when she realized

Stealing is a plan to take something. Not being charged for something is a different story.

No, you are describing premeditated stealing, otherwise known as shoplifting. Keeping an item that you didn't pay for, even if it wasn't your fault, can certainly be seen as stealing.

Forget little kids walking out of a store with an unpaid item. We were in Hawaii at the bookshop at Pearl Harbor and I walked out with a book under my arm. Of course as soon as I realized what I did, I took it back and apologized.

If I was already home I don't know if I would ever get around to returning a $25 item unless it was like my husbands store which he is in all the time. If it was more I would but then again if it was a high amount I would have noticed the price not being what I expected. I definitely wouldn't call because its not like they can do something over the phone and calling stores takes SOO long for them to find managers etc.

My husband and I have walked out of the store or gotten to the door and picking all the bags up to find something we forgot to put in the aisle (case of water under the cart, something under the coat, etc) those we definitely go back in and pay for.

I have kept money I have found on the side walk that doesn't bother me at all. I will return it if I saw who dropped it though.

One my husband has no problem with but I feel weird about is buying an item that is marked wrong in the aisle but you KNOW should really be more and having them price adjust it since it was marked wrong. On one hand the store really should be better about marking this and my husband has at times told his store that something is marked wrong and none of the people who are responsible bother to fix it. I think this is why he has no problem getting the item cheaper becasue if the store doesn't care why should he.

I would keep the item and consider it my lucky day.

And truth be told - I think that most of the "holier-than-thos" posting that they would return to the store and pay for it - really wouldn't and they know they would keep the item too...they just aren't willing to admit it!

Do the right thing. You'll feel better in the long run. I found $10 cash outside the bank the other day. It was with a receipt for an ethnic food store and probably the person couldn't afford to lose it. I turned it in to the bank. Will it ever get to the real owner? I doubt it, but I feel better anyway.

Oh yeah, I asked the two people near by and outside the bank if it was their money, no one claimed it. So, I wasn't the only honest person there that day.

Wow!!!!! No racial sterotypes in that sentence at all !!!!
