What would you do in this scenario...

You go shopping and buy a bunch of stuff. The cashier is pretty chatty, so the two of you are talking while she rings everything up, and neither of you is really paying much attention.

You get home and realize that she did not charge you for an item. Let's assume the item cost more than $25 and the store is within 20 mins of your home/work.

If we are talking groceries, and a small item dollar or so, I wouldn't bother.
gas is too expensive and I live too far :)
but in the case of over $25 I would pay for the item. I would not make a special trip again because I live too far and gas is too high, but I would call and speak to a manager, tell them what happened and tell them on your next trip to that store you will pay for the item.

what store and what was the item?

Shrinkage increases prices for everyone. I'd find a way to pay. I probably wouldn't make a special trip back, but I'd bring the item or package and the receipt with me next time I was going in that direction.

eta: I know it wasn't intentional shrink, and absolutely not not not the OP's responsibility in any way.

I'd call the store and see what they want me to do. I probably wouldn't make a special trip there if it was far, but I would let the manager know that the next time I am near there I'd come in and pay for it and take the manager's name/info down so when I DO go back I don't confuse them.

Do the right thing. You'll feel better in the long run. I found $10 cash outside the bank the other day. It was with a receipt for an ethnic food store and probably the person couldn't afford to lose it. I turned it in to the bank. Will it ever get to the real owner? I doubt it, but I feel better anyway.

Oh yeah, I asked the two people near by and outside the bank if it was their money, no one claimed it. So, I wasn't the only honest person there that day.

Huh?

OP- what does your conscious say to do or are you just looking for validation to keep it?

My first thought was to take it back and pay for it the next time I was out that way, but then I thought that that would most likely get the cashier in trouble. Then again, she did neglect to ring up an item priced at over $25, so that just can't be allowed to continue happening. I think I would have to take it back though, I just wouldn't feel right not doing it.

I would want to return it or pay for it, but the reality is that if I didn't discover it until later, I would more than likely not get around to it. Getting to the grocery is a pain to begin with, and it is probable that I wouldn't be able to go back right away to deal with that. And with my old brain, I doubt I would remember next time I was in there. But if I did remember, I would absolutely settle up.

What does that mean?

OP, I would call the manager and let them know and I would return to the store and pay for it.

This happened to me last year when a new Target finally opened on our side of town. The cashier and I were chatting and I didn't pay much attention to the final total.

Later when I got home I checked my receipt (something I rarely do) because I had bought something and wanted to make sure I had been charged the right price. It wasn't on the receipt. Weird, I thought and started checking for other things I bought and noticed a few more things missing. By then I had put everything away and since it wasn't listed on the receipt I was having a hard time remembering everything I had bought.

Eventually I figured out around 6 things I wasn't charged for, so I rounded them back up and that night when I got off work I took them back to pay for them. The girl behind the desk was so confused and couldn't figure out what I was doing, she had to actually ask someone else over to help her. They were both shocked I brought it all back in to pay for it. A manager came over and was very surprised too, he gave me 10% off because I had to drive back to pay for the items which came to over $40.

I remembered the cashier swiping each item as we talked, but evidently they weren't actually ringing up, so I think maybe the registers still had some glitches since it was a brand new store.

What does that mean?

I am not that poster, but when I read that I took it to mean, the receipt is an identifier, as in
"hey did anyone find a receipt from xyz store and $10 ?"

Why would you return to pay for it? When things like this happen they are just good luck like finding $10 on the ground. Are you going to stand there and ask people if they dropped it? Just keep it cal it good luck.

If a company over charged you do you think they would seek you out for a refund?

Though I'm a horrible, wretched, evil person so don't listen to me.

Maybe, but since she is posting about it here she could have just said it was folded up in a reciept, and she could have left out the part about not being able to afford to lose it all together.

I think what the PP's were confused about, is that poster made it seem like because the person was shopping at an ethnic food store, they couldn't afford to lose the $10. As if somehow shopping at an ethnic food store makes you poor. I'm hoping that isn't what she meant, but that's how I read it.

Yes, thats is how I took what she wrote. I don't think anyone can afford to lose money, whether or not they shop at Neiman Marcus or ethnic food stores so the mention of the place stuck out to me.

I'd keep the item. That has happened to me before, though for small items. I never went back to the store and alerted anyone. Flame suit is on, just in case.

I would call the store and pay for it next time I was in. I wouldn't make a special trip. I will tell you a story though....My DSis and I were buying 2 identical rugs at a discount carpet store. The cashier made a mistake and only charged us for 1. My DSis tried to correct him and told him he was charging us the wrong price. He interrupted her, got all huffy and started yelling at us that he knows what he's doing and that's the price. My DSis politely thanked him and we got two rugs for the price of one. I still laugh about it.
