For those that don't know who she is -- she's the 16 year old female golfer who is trying to become the first woman to ever qualify for the Men's US Open today.

I just saw an update: http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?slug=wiesectionalcard&prov=st&type=lgns

She's just finished her first round (they play 36 holes for qualifying). She's 2 Under (she shot a 68). :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

No word yet what it might take to qualify (18 out of 153 golfers in this location qualify), but that's an impressive first round, considering the attention she has to be getting today. :thumbsup2

Update: She bogeyed her first hole in the second round, but is still 1 under through 23 holes now. :thumbsup2

No kidding!! What she is trying to accomplish is fantastic.

Wow, this is impressive. I hope she's able to qualify.

Go Michelle! :cheer2:

Remind me again why men can't play in LPGA?

Ok great for Michele, that would be an AWESOME accomplishment, and I would totally giver her credit for beating them men, but why is it that the women feel they SHOULD BE ALLOWED to play PGA, but no men are allowed into LPGA?

I'm sorry but being the sports junkie that I am this bothers me to no end. Fine women want equal treatment in sports, yada yada, that's fine, but remember what the word equal means...EQUAL. If a female gets to play in a mens tourney, it should also be the other way around no questions asked.

So I am all for letting them play in the mens tourny that's prefectly fine to me, just don't cry if a man wants to play an LPGA tourny.

I think they should make the Skins co-ed....I know Annika has played in the past couple, but make it EQUAL. 2 men 2 women, etc. When Annika has played those have been interesting, maybe having Wie along with her would be even better.

sorry rant over....lol

go Wie!

I don't know much about golf, but she makes me want to learn more. I'm really rooting for her.

I'd love to hear the answer to this also! Anybody care to respond?

Technically, it's because the LPGA specifically states that you must be a female golfer to play. The PGA doesn't make such a specification -- any "open" tournament can be qualified for by any golfer with the proper handicap level. :)

Good explanation, I guess I never thought of that.

So then do you think the women would get mad if they changed it to males only....lol.

Go Michelle! I have to admit, I hate to PLAY golf, but I love to WATCH golf.

It would take about three seconds for the first discrimination lawsuit to be filed! :confused3

I don't think any male pro would take much pride in winning a women's golf tournament considering that the men average around 290 yards off the tee and the women around 245. Michelle is one of the few who can belt the ball around 300 yards.

I'm sure some woman would sue, but it probably wouldn't be anyone who could actually play in a PGA event. Besides, the PGA Tour isn't dumb -- this kind of thing stirs interest in the sport, which, in the end, is good for them (at least in the pocketbook).

I've heard stories of guys filing lawsuit to play on the women's tour. Problem is, they're never taken seriously for one main reason -- the guys usually have no game. How'd you like to be the guy known for getting your *** beat by women? :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 And if anyone with some actual talent tried playing in a women's event, they'd get laughed off the course the next time they showed up at a men's event.

um, this is kind of how I feel about any male professional athlete who feels the need to run and change the rules in order to avoid competing against a 16 year old girl.
