hi all,
so i worked a 16 hour tour yesterday,no biggie i do them all the time.so anyway the am sunday was very busy.i mean strange busy.so about 6 pm a few of us are standing in the door way of the fire house.we had the door open cause the heat there works too well.it was very hot inside.so anyway this guy we have never seen before, nicly dressed walks over and says"may i ask you which company lost the most guys on sept 11?"
now we call every guy that is assigned to say ladder 107 is the company,or every guy assigned to engine 257 is the company.so i look at this guy and say i think rescue 2 or 5 lost the most guys.the man in his mid 30's seems to get very angered and very mad to the point were i thought he might try to hit one of us.he says in a pissed off tone of voice."actualy cantor and fitzgerald lost over 900 people thats the company who lost the most, why is it always about FDNY with you Fire people??It's not all about the Fdny, you all are'nt the only ones!"he turns looks at us one last time and spits on the floor and says you all are disgusting, all of you fdny people and walks away. also i had to edit all of the foul lang that came out of his mouth. WOW we were shocked, and yes i know my team was not the only ones there that day or who lost people that day.but the way he asked the question i thought he meant the fdny companys.i really felt bad for him.i think he lost someone there and he felt that the fdny were the only one's in the spotlight that day, that is not true..he was in pain,i actualy thought about inviting him in the fire house for a cup of coffee to talk alittle, but my guys felt is was best to just leave it alone in fear that he might start a fight or hit one of us. :confused3

Yikes!!! I can understand where it was hard and continues to be hard for those directly affected by 9/11 but its too bad he is harboring so much anger and vented it at you guys!! I think you did the right thing just letting him go on his way. Sounds like he wasnt in a place to accept any help from you postively.

It seems like he might be someone with some anger towards the FDNY. I mean, I lost an uncle (FDNY) that day and I would get very angry if he said that to me, but at the same time - I can see his point. No one talks about Cantor anymore - and that was a sad story.

Dont stress it, because while he has his opinion, there are many people who would have answered the same exact way you did. He just was angry over something!

I am shocked that someone would actually do that. My family lost friends that worked in the towers. My DBF lost his neighbor that worked on one of the upper floors. My uncle was there (PAPD) and lost many of his friends and co-workers that day. But not one of their family members would ever say something like that to any member of the FDNY. You were the guys running in when everyone else was running out. PAPD, FDNY and NYPD should be commended for what they did.

I agree...

FDNY were the ones running INTO the inferno.

I am sorry that this guy is harboring so much anger and hostility... (He really needs to get help to get past that first stage of grief!!!)

But, it is not just about the numbers. It is about putting your lifes on the line to save others... (Which is NOT why the C.F people were there) The C.F. people did not make the purposeful decision to risk, and LOSE their lives.

This guy should have been on his knees thanking FDNY for doing their best to save the C.F. people!!!!

You did best to just let it go.

Wow, you must have such a big heart to feel so kindly towards the man. If someone asked me which company in the context of being near a fire department, I would have thought he meant FDNY as well and I have nothing to do with firefighters!

Maybe he's suffering from some PTSD. Very sad that you and your coworkers had to deal with the brunt of it, though.

That guy is a whacko!! Don't feel bad for him, he should have never said anything like that!

Wow, there is a man in pain. There are two different groups who died that day (IMHO) the victims in the towers who never knew what was coming and the HEROS of the fire, police and port authority who knew how bad it was and went anyway.

It isn't a contest to see who lost the most people, it was a tragedy in every sense of the word. BTW, my husband's company, Marsh & McClennen, lost the second most people in one business company that day, the second plane hit their offices directly. I am so glad he was here and not in the midst of that.

Kudos to you for recognizing his pain and wanting to help.

So you're standing in the doorway of a firehouse and he asks you what COMPANY lost the most people on September 11th? I would have thought he was asking exactly the same question that you did.

Guy was WAY out of line to blow up at you - sounds like he has major "issues".

Hang in there - and thanks for all that you do.

Sad. The way he phrased the question "which co lost the most guys that day" asked outside of a firehouse, of course you are going to assume he meant within FDNY. Anyone would.

That poor man is obviously suffering but sounds like he has too much anger towards your profession for you to have done him any good.

whoa - I would have thought the same as you - regarding the word "company". How sad that he feels that way. And how compassionate for you to recognize his pain.

I too can see his point (do not agree on how he handles it). Every person who died there that day deserves to be remembered in the same light.

I'm sorry to hear that happened to you and your guys. I'm sure it hurt, but it sounds like that man is hurting big time. This is just another reason that I think you guys are heros. You were able to overlook what the guy said and understand where it was coming from.

You're very kind to be so nice about this man's behavior toward you. I would have understood his question just as you did. Standing in the door of the firehouse and askig which company lost the most people would lead one to think he meant fire company.

In any event, he's a poor soul with issues. The holidays are especially rough for folks who grieve. Bless you for your kindness toward him, when you could have been really mean. And thank you for what you do.

Totaly agree. I wonder how many people he lost that day. And the worst part of a loss is that everybody ele's life seems to keep on going while the people you lost are forgotten.

That isn't true. Everybody has losses and sorrows in their life, but it can feel like that.
