Wow... new Kindle is coming out soon

I know two people who've broken a Kindle, and they were both tweens. And one of them is definitely irresponsible with her things -- her parents buy her so much that she doesn't value and take care of expensive toys. I'd guess that teens might be more likely than adults to toss a Kindle into a bookbag.

On the other hand, my Kindle's an older model that's no longer available, and it's in perfect condition because it's literally always either in my hand or packed away in its protective case. And I have a friend my age whose brand-new Kindle "just wasn't quite right" -- it'd hang up for 5 minutes, then start working again -- and she sent it back to Amazon on Day 2 of ownership; they exchanged it without any trouble. Aside from her, I haven't known an adult who's had a problem, and I'm sure she had the bad luck to get a defective one.

If I end up buying these for my daugthers for Christmas, I think I will get the insurance for them -- though I probably woudln't do it for myself. I think it might be most important for my soon-to-be-a-college-student daughter. Living in a dorm room, things on her desk could easily be subjected to food, drink, friends -- it'd be very easy for something bad to happen to her machine. Hmmm . . . my Kindle cord is really cool: It's a wall plug-in, but if you pull off the "prongs thing" it's a USB underneath. Sounds like they may've developed a cheaper model? I'd want to know for certain before ordering.

Personally, my favorite charging method is my little docking station. It sits in the bay window in my bedroom behind a curtain, and it's super-convenient.

Mrs. Pete, look into the Square Trade warranty. Sometimes you can search the Kindle forums and get a discount code for them.

Personally, I got warranties for my Kindle DX and my first two "regular" Kindles, but not any of the smaller less expensive ones.

Both of my girls have my older Kindles and love them. They are both voracious pleasure readers. I'm getting them Fires for Christmas this year so they can have a smaller, cheaper than an iPad tablet and also use it for magazine reading.

I'm wonder if there are any of these out there that have multiple USB ports on them. And since my car has a USB port as well... I use the USB cable (with or without the adapter) for charging my phone and Ipod everywhere now! I keep one adapter at home, and the other stays in my bag.

Yes. They have. This is the one I have. I bought it on black Friday last year and love it. I did not buy a charger with the Kindle I preordered yesterday because we have this.

I did not realize there was a docking station. I'm so glad you guys posted about this...Off to check them out.

As far as wear and tear...the are easy to mess up the screens. I know adults and kids who have, but I know more that haven't. Some of those that have though are people who take care of their stuff. I bought mine at Staples and bought their replacement policy because of this and will always buy some time of replacement policies for the traditional ones...I don't know about the Fire.

Late to the party and sorry if this has already been posted. You borrowed a book on Kindle? How? From another use or the library?

Here is the press release from Amazon with information: http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=176060&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=1608874&highlight=

You can borrow them from most public libraries now, it's great!

Yup :thumbsup2 I have already finished one book and just borrowed another. I am thrilled that Library lending is finally available! It is so easy to do over wifi, much nicer than having to side load like on the Nook.

I think I am getting the touch model. Might as well pre-order one now. I wanted to ask what everyone is doing for covers? I think the ones amazon is selling are $35. Will other companies make cheaper ones once the devices come out? And is anyone buying the accedent policy? Is it worth the $20?

thanks, Jen

My friend swears by the lighted Kindle Cover. She loves that her husband can go to bed early and she can stay up and read w/o disturbing him. I will probably get these for all the Kindle's I just ordered because my kids like to read in the car and in their beds at night etc. They are pricy but like I said she swears by it.

If you don't care about the light, I'm sure you can pick up a cheap cover on ebay. That is where I get all my cell phone/ipad covers. Usually for a dollar or two.

THAT is the greatest thing I've ever seen. Okay... slight exaggeration. But that is something I must have... and I must have it now!! :lmao: :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Thanks!!

I can't remember the brand I have - mine is white and not black. But I bought it at Home Depot if you want to run out and get one right now.

One of the first offers I got on my Kindle with special offers was for $25.00 off a cover, so if you're getting one with special offers you may want to hold off on the cover. I also got money off the skin, and a $20 Amazon gift card for $10.

We love it in my house. And it's great when we travel as that eliminates almost all of our chargers.

I got one today for $5 off a $10 purchase.

Which model would you choose for a 12 yr old who is an avid reader? I can't seem to decide between the basic $79 version or the touch version for $99. We have a wireless connection at home, so I don't think she would need the 3G version.

Thanks!

I would spend the extra $20 and get the touch verison! It's the only thing I wish mine had. The 3G really does come in handy, it's great to be able to download books form anywhere!

Thanks for telling me! I have been debating ording the covers for Christmas or waiting until birthday's. Especially for the kids I want them to have covers but at $50 each it was going to add up! I will wait and see what I get.

I am getting the Touch for my 9 & 11 yo. My 11 yo has the Nook (not Nook Touch), and I don't care for it. It was too cumbersome to have to click vs swipe. (But I am used to reading on the iPad Kindle app.)

This new small Kindle ($79) is not available in the UK until October 12 and we leave for the airport on October 13, so no chance of having it before we go. Besides it is going to be £89 so a lot more expensive that in the US. I am going to wait until we get there. :cool1:

Yes, I tried to find mine online, but I can't locate it. It's not an Amazon product. I'm pretty sure it cost $10-12. Works great.

Why would you go with the touch screen? My older Kindle doesn't have it, and I don't really get the point. Am I missing something?

I have an ipad and am kind of "eh" about the touchscreen.

Would the Kindle touchscreen still be read-able in bright sun? That's a feature I value.

I posted a lot of information on Lisalovespooh's thread on the kindle -

For covers I love my leather oberon cover - but I know you can go to etsy to get a homemade cover - on kindle boards.com there was a poster who showed how he made a cover using one of those plastic folders - and bubble wrap - then there was a guy who used bubble wrap mail envelope and made a cover!

another guy showed how you could make a cheap book light -

I posted why I like the keyboard - or why dd loves her keyboard (one was for a game I picked up for free - minesweeper) another reason was she makes "notes"

If you are going to buy a kindle - go to Amazon and create your account and start loading it with FREE books - (free books are posted daily on amazon's discussion page - on the homepage of amazon.com use the drop down menu and choose kindle store - click go then on the menu board you'll see discussions - - then look for "FREE BOOKS + the date - many of the free books disappear within days, many books remain free for weeks, or months - Happy REader Joyce posts these - in a clickable format )

again, you don't have to have the kindle to start acquiring free books!

There is also a thread on discounted kindle books - and I've been amazed at how some of my favorite books have gone down - again, some not for long! (The Hunger Book trilogy went for $5 for a couple of days I think)

There seems to me there was a thread on a young adult thread - on kindle boards there is usually someone that posts asking for suggestions for books...

The Kindle Touch is still e-ink so it will be fine in the sun, just like the current Kindles. The FIRE is backlit and will not perform as well in the sun. I use the Kindle App on my ipad and one of the reasons I want a Kindle is because I can't read the ipad outside, especially w/sunglasses on.

You can also go to ereaderiq.com and sign up to have the new free list emailed to you 2x a day.

Another great cover to check out is by M Edge. They make leather covers for all sorts of tablets and ereaders. Really nice leather, secure straps, and great choice of colors.

I also like the lighted cover from Amazon.
