When I posted the 1st time in regard to how I go about getting a passport for my newborn everyone had some suggestions of ideas but didn't know the actual process and i remember at least 1 other parent awaiting my answer on how I did it because she was going to have to do the same thing......

So, as soon as the baby was born I went IN PERSON to register the birth, I then asked for a TRAVEL LETTER. I ordered the birth certificate online after that and printed the receipt. I had passport pics done and had my guarantor sign everything. I took the passport app, photos, travel letter and proof of birth certificate receipt along with PROOF OF TRAVEL (email of airline ticket receipt) to the Scarboro office IN PERSON today - they GUARANTEED delivery WITHIN 2 WEEKS!!! WOW!!! I was so stressed about how I was going to get a passport without a birth certificate (waiting time is 3-4 months for that) but if you have all the above info then you can get a "limited validity passport" could for up to 1 year for $22 and they will extend the time period when you provide a birth certificate later!!

Just sharing!!:)

Glad it worked out and you don't have to stress anymore!:goodvibes
When are you going to tell the kids?

Thanks for posting your info...I think it was me waiting to hear how it all worked out for you. I'm still in limbo about what to do, waiting to hear back from our travel agent. We have time, not travelling till the end of January, but it will be cutting it close to wait it out the old fashioned way. I dropped the birth registration off in person last week and they told me it is taking 5 months to register the births. Once I get that it would be 15 days for a birth certificate online and then approx 2 weeks for passport if I go in person. Disney wants the passport numbers in November for the cruise, so this may not even be an option for us. I just hate having to pay the extra $25 for the travel letter and $22 for the interim passport because the government is so darn slow. 5 months to register a birth?!??! What the heck takes so long?!?!?

Oh well, I called Disney and officially added Caeden to our travel plans for the WDW portion of the trip, so now it seems real...we'll be a family of 4 at ASMo in 6 months!!!:woohoo:

Hello PrincessasMommy,

First of all, congratulations! I'm so glad that you posted your reply. This is the first time I've ever posted here, and I didn't even know this forum existed, until I Googled "passport for newborn"! Anyhow, we have a similar quandary, cuz we just had our first boy on August 4, and need to travel to Hong Kong by November, but when I tried to apply for a passport, it asks for a SSN, and we won't receive that for another 8-10 weeks (at least!)... I hope you could help us out by answering a few questions?

first of all, did you have to put a SSN on your passport app, or did you somehow expedite that process too?
secondly, when you say you went "IN PERSON to register" the birth... what do you mean by register? with whom? Is this a Disney-travel-specific step? And what is the "Scarboro office", is that also a Disney office?

Any help you can offer us, would be greatly appreciated. We applied for our birth certificate at the hospital and they expedited it for us, so after a week, we already have our birth certificate, but trying to get our little boy a passport so he can travel with us to Hong Kong!

thanks... feel free to reply directly to my email, instead of this forum, if you like.

Hi Ian,

Sorry, but I am in Canada so I imagine my advice may not be as useful as you thought. You'll have to call your local passport office in the US. Have a great trip!!:)

Hi,

I just had a couple of questions regarding your passport experience for your newborn;

1) Where did you go to register the birth in person and what did you need to bring with you?

2)What is a Travel Letter and where do you get it from?

3)How long did these 2 steps take?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Just wanted to post a little note about Birth Certificate waiting times in Ontario...

We had Pierce on October 10th. I immediate filed ONLINE for the Statement of Live Birth, Birth Certificate -and- SIN. By November 3rd, I had all three official documents in hand. The minute that arrived, I filed his passport request via an "agent" (meaning not at the main Passport Canada counter) - and we had his passport back in a little over a week.

So, while the Ontario Govt may say waiting times for the Statement of Live Birth and Birth Certificate processing is 16+ weeks - if you take the time to do the online process (and yes, you can check your status too!), it's VERY quick.

Here's the link in case anyone needs it for newborn registration: https://www.orgforms.gov.on.ca/IBR/start.do

This is a link to the status check tool:

First of all, you posted this in the "Canadian Trip Planning" forum. You mention "SSN" in your post, so I'm assuming that you're American. You may not get any help applying for a US passport, here.

"Scarboro office" most likely refers to a Passport Canada office in Scarborough, a city near Toronto, ONT.

As abirdd posted, Ont. Gov't website says "16 weeks", but if you register online it is MUCH faster - I had my son on a Monday, applied online for Statement of Live Birth, Birth Certificate and SIN the next day (Tuesday), and the birth certificate was delivered on Friday (ie my son was only 4 days old!). For anyone else looking for a travel letter, check with your municipality - my city (Kitchener) stopped issuing travel letters once they implemented online birth registrations, so I was very glad that the birth certificate arrived so quickly (as we had a trip planned for when baby was going to be 9 weeks).

thanks for sharing your experience...
but since I am from USA, it might be a bit difficult for me..
thanks anyways..
