Holiday prices are so different.

Orlando with park ticket, flights and an economy hotel for 5 days would close in at about £2,000.
Vegas for the same would be about £1,500.

But.

A 5 night stay in the 5* resort "La Manga Club" in Spain, in a luxury penthouse apartment, pampered with restaurants, bars, sports facilities and beaches and even shows plus flights and limo transfers would set you back £800. And an economy room would set you back £400, all in.

I know where I'm going next. For the record, I have visited La Manga Club and is is BEAUTIFUL!

I don't think you can compare flights from the UK to the US with flights from the UK to Spain.

With Vegas, time of year and time of week will affect the hotel cost.

I think the biggest skewing is in flights - UK to US flights are about £500 whilst UK to Murcia flights are sub £100. But the costs of accommodation are insane. That's the killer.

There's a lot of factors. Here's the biggest... people are willing to pay them (same with Disney tix). If people didn't pay, prices would drop.

I just don't get though why a 5 night stay in the Aventura (a nice if basic hotel) at Universal is three times the cost of the same stay in a Los Olives penthouse suite?

What's the cost of the staff?
What's the cost of the land?
What's the cost of the building?
What are customers willing to pay?

Haha, I've lived in Southern California most of my life and had to look up Los Olives on a map ... that might say something about the nearby amenities. Turns out I've driven past there many a time.

No staff in Spain; cheaper land in Orlando; building is about the same (maybe a bit more expensive in Spain as there's WAY more footage) and people going to Murcia are typically willing to pay even less as it's near the Strip, which is awash with vacant apartment blocks.

There's no staff? No one does housekeeping? Man a desk? Maintenance?

My point is there are fixed costs that owners need to make up and PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY MORE for the US properties.

Because it's next to Universal. You're not staying at Aventura to hang out in the room.

For some people the convenience of a room next to a theme park is worth a lot. That is what you're seeing reflected in those prices.

For hotels at Disney and Universal, you are paying for the convenience of being close to the theme parks. These hotels are not luxury accommodations and should not be compared to actual luxury resorts. They're priced the way they are due to simple supply and demand. Same goes for flights to Orlando.

My point was that you get so, so much more bang for your buck by staying in the 5* La Ma Manga Club in a luxury penthouse suite, from flights to accommodation, from entertainment to activities, from weather to luxury. You get more, but you pay less. In Orlando, I reckon it's because you're close to the parks but that falls over if you don't actually visit the parks. And in Vegas you getting lovely hotels for much less money but shows can cost the earth and besides, accommodation and luxuries are superior in La Manga.

And no, there are no front desks in Los Olives. It's self contained but you can choose where to eat if you should care to, or simply go to the beach.

But yeah. As I said, with La Manga, you get more bang for your buck, BIG time.

Isn't it great that people have different opinions on what's important to them?

I think a portion of this different might be in exchange rate. The pound has lost 13.7% of it's purchasing power in USD relative to 5 years ago while the Euro is flat.

I’m a Brit who lives about 20 minutes from the parks in Winter Garden, just outside of Orlando. When we lived in the the UK, we’d travel to Spain, Greece and other European destinations a lot, as well as taking a lot of US trips. Based on my having experienced both spectrums what you’re discussing, my observations

  1. Disney will always command a massive premium and people are willing to pay. Like the other poster said, it’s supply and demand…and the demand is almost unlimitless
  2. A glass of wine and a plate of iberica ham in Spain wasn’t much more than what a dozen eggs cost in the US. Ths5 would be $40 here, not $10. And generally speaking the wages are better here. They have to be. Some things are wildly more expensive, but you get used to it
