Wow - BIG pipe break at BWV

Just returned from a chilly trip to BWV and not sure if this posted prior but a 16 inch pipe broke on the 2nd floor flooding out rooms 2050 to 2015. All the ceiling was pulled down in the halls, with a white mesh netting put up in place of plaster. All rooms had carpet pulled from the tacking to dry. All furniture was put up higher, everything lifted off the floor as much as possible. There were literally hundreds of drying fans and dihumiderfiers at work all weekend. The worst rooms were finally stripped to bare walls and floors and all furniture removed. I asked how it happened and they were not sure if it was cold, which I doubt as it never got to freezing or just too much pressure. No wonder they continue to work on pipes at BWV. It was quite annoying to walk through the halls, stepping over extension cords, high winds from the fans and very, very loud. What a mess. Caution tape in front of open room doors. We were at the end of hall, and not only had that long walk, but also this mess to contend with. The restaurant underneath was also affected I understand. It happened the day before we arrived and wonder what they did to all the affected guest. Was anyone in one of these rooms when this happened? They are working in it as we speak. Our room was fine and in the lobby area you would never know anything was wrong.

Big River Grill is the only restaurant in that area.

That's awful. Hopefully, there weren't 100% booked and will be able to move folks around. Something has not been right with the construction at BWV from the beginning. The on-going pipe repair that's been scheduled to last over a year was an indication they had something hinky going on. I guess the line about "guest rooms not being effected" will need to be changed.

Hopefully, no one was too terribly inconvenienced.

Not to minimize the severity of this incident, but I find it quite amusing that we were notified of the flooding by "Niagara2"

I hope they are able to recoup some of the costs from the original contractor (assuming that was the cause of the problem). Or were the pipes themselves not made to code?...in which case the manufacturer should kick in for repairs.

I immediately thought the same thing, but you beat me to it!!! Very interesting information--I hope the people were not disrupted very much and that the rooms are not out of service long.

I'm sure someone else knows more about this than I do, but my understanding is that BWV has been undergoing a plumbing replacement project for a year now to replace original construction which was found to be defective.

I'm curious as to whether the impacted area sported the new piping or the old piping.

We just returned from WDW last night. Yesterday Afternoon, we were boating from MGM to ESPN and I noticed a large tent set up behind BWV and a truck there, that belonged to a "Emergency clean up service". Thanks for the update, I was wondering what was going on!

So that's what happened! I was there this past weekend as well (darn, it was cold and windy and rainy). I thought it had something to do with all the rain we had on Friday. The Screen Door Store was closed Friday AM, was that due to the pipe bursting as well?

We were there this weekend also. All the stores near the general store (a men's clothing store & a women's clothing store) were closed until Monday. We were on the 4th fl. so we were not affected but I was also wondering where they put everyone. We were in a studio & tried to change to a 1-bedroom before we left & were told that it was full.

I'm just curious. Does anyone know if there were any guests who were at the parks when this big break happened and had their stuff ruined. I got to thinking that because we stayed in that group of rooms 1/2 and my first reaction was "Imagine if that had happened 2 weeks ago!" Did this happen during the day or at night? Anyone know any more details?

We were also there this weekend. We had two separate reservations so we had to change rooms Sunday. The cast member who checked us in told us about the pipe break and said that people were moved to the inn or another resort. I'm not sure what time of day it happened but I think it was daytime. She wasn't working the day it happened but said she heard the sprinklers went off because it was hot water so that added to the damage. SHe warned us that we were near the break but said that everything was ok with our room. We were in Room 2018 Sunday and Monday nights so the minute we stepped outside our room we were met with a blast of cold air (not exactly what you wanted to feel on a very cold weekend!). We could hear the fans while in our room but it wasn't too loud. Wish the weekend had been warmer but 50 in Florida is better than -2.6 in Maine (the temperature when we left for work this morning).

Thats sounds like shoddy original construction. A 16 inch pipe will not freeze and burst, it would have to be about 10 to 20 degrees and even then, i doubt it would freeze because of the flow of the water.

I think, the original contractor, of BWV did some pretty lousy work.

This sounds like the area they were working in around Thanksgiving. I remember because it was right before my 12/4/04 trip and someone posted about all the construction in the hallway at the end of the second floor. I then put in a request for top floor and we ended up on the fifth floor, no construction.

If indeed as Sporty mentions the sprinklers went off because it was a hot water pipe, then I can't see how it could possibly freeze and burst. You figure someone somewhere downstream from the break has to be using hot water at any given time.

Thus we have further support for the hypothesis that it was something other than freezing that led to the burst, most likely shoddy work.

This all started before it turned cold... last Thursday afternoon, I think. We were on our fifth floor balcony and I saw the ServPro clean-up truck on the BoardWalk outside Big River Grill. The wait staff was milling around outside, no patrons at the tables, and a guy was wheeling racks of clothing out of the store. Within an hour or two, the truck was gone, the BRG tables were set and filling up. Don't know what happened to any of the guest rooms.
