If you absolutely hated your job and you had one year's worth of money in the bank (enough to cover your usual monthly bills and the cost of paying COBRA for health insurance), would you do it? You are the sole support of a family of 4 and you don't want to relocate, so it may take a long time to find a job. Do you feel that one year's expense money is enough for you to be comfortable quitting your job?

Your house and cars are paid off.

No. Just because you are paying for COBRA coverage, doesn't mean everything is going to be covered.

Houses still need to be repaired and cars as well.

Plus what if you died? We only have life insurance thru DH's work. If he were to die, I would be in trouble.

No, not unless it was a truly horrible job situation (I was being threatened or harassed... basically I didn't feel safe.). And even then I'd probably stick it out until I had another one lined up behind it. You never know what could come up.

Especially not the way the economy is right now. I feel lucky just having a job.

No. I wouldn't quit one job until I had another. Especially if I was the sole support of my family. What looks like a year's worth of money can quickly go away if someone were to get ill or be in an accident.

No way. Think of how you will feel a year from now when your savigs are gone and you haven't found another job.

Look for a new job, maybe even one that doesn't pay as well as yours now, but still has benefits. Consider using the savings to compensate for the loss in income or the increase in the cost of those benefits to you.

No I would not. A year's savings can dwindle fast if you have unplanned medical situations come up. I was still working but drained a huge chunk of savings to pay for one of my chemo drugs that was not covered under our insurance.

Not if I had kids, but if it were just me, or myself and my spouce, then I'd concider it.

No.

It is actually much easier to get a new job while you are employed.

And if you get any job interviews, be prepared to give an acceptable answer as to why you are looking for new employment; do not just say that you hate your current job.

And also, if being interviewed, let them know that if they decide to hire you, you feel an obligation to give at least two weeks notice to your current employer.

Those two answers/comments will actually be positive items when consideration is given to hiring you.

Nope. No way. It is much harder to find a job when you are unemployed. Employers wonder why you are not employed.

I was laid off for about 6 months several years ago. I went through several rounds of interviews and felt very confident I was going to be hired. They asked me to take one more call "as a formality". The guy kept asking why I had not found another job. I explained several times I had been laid off due to downsizing and had not found the right opportunity. He could get past it. Kept asking if I had other offers and was being picky or if I just couldn't find anyone to hire me. Clearly no answer was going to win. I did not get the job and was told he was the reason.

I did find a job later but that job seemed like a dream job for me. I believe things happen for a reason but i was hard to get over.

You never know what could come up in the year. You are taking a gamble.

It is much easier to find a job while you have one than to find one when you don't. Quitting to quit looks worse than quitting to move on to another opportunity. I would work at McDonalds or something rather than sitting at home and not having income just because I had some money saved.

And if all you have is living expenses for a year, there is no wiggle room. A years worth for a family of 4 is not much when life happens. Even with excelent health care, copays for a major issue get expensive should someone get sick.

In addition to a years worth of living expenses do you have a retirement account? It isn't all about what you spend in an average year but what you have for later. With the recent increase in minimum wage the price of a lot of things will be going up, so a years worth now, is not the same a year from now.

I would think unless you make over 6 figures/year and have other savings/ investments in addition to your years worht of living $ that you would be putting your family in fanacial risk by doing that.

You don't say anything illegal or unsafe is going on. So, my answer is no. With the way things are right now, it would not be a good idea. Find another job.

I almost forgot. If this is you, I am really sorry you hate your job, that makes life difficult. Try to find a way to decompress afterwards and to enjoy the time away from work.

I wouldn't even wait for a year's savings.

I don't believe in being miserable just to support a family. It was awful growing up having a dad who HATED his job so much. He was cranky and detested leaving the house. I'd never do that to my family. He was always unhappy and made us all unhappy too. He was great on vacation, though.

I'm glad my dad now retired from that crappy place and now works where he is very happy.

I even asked him why he did it. Basically, he said people didn't change jobs back then and he felt trapped, as if he would NEVER be employed elsewhere. It never even entered his head to try and find another job and he said he kicks himself now just thinking about it.
