OK... here's my thoughts.

First of all, DEFINITELY order the cake!! Don't wait for him to do these things for you, I waited, the first part of my marriage, and I'd be hurt and sometimes even offended, that my husband just didn't do those kinds of things. Then I realized that he really does NOT have the ability to do it. He doesn't think of surprises, he doesn't know how to shop, he doesn't know the first thing about ordering anything.. the list goes on. So, now I have taken responsibility for my own happiness (shouldn't we all?) and if I want something, I either let him know very clearly, or I do it for myself. Nothing wrong with that.

Next thought (sorry.. but you asked!) I haven't had a birthday cake in years! I LOVE the idea of doing this for yourself, but for me, some of it would be the element of the surprise. SO... I would find a really dear friend, who knows you well, and I would give that friend your credit card and ask him/her to make the order and take care of the details. This way you can be sure that it will be something special (a fondant covered disney DREAM!) and something geared toward YOU. No need to be embarrassed, because you won't be the one who placed the order.

I know that others have said your husband should do this, but if my husband was left to do this, I would get a hostess cupcake with a candle in it (and the candle would be Disney's idea.. not his!) So, if money truly isn't an issue, GO FOR IT! Do it up right! If it's breakfast... SO BE IT!!! Birthdays only come once a year, and we never, ever know what can happen between this one and the next. LIVE IT UP!

OK, enough of my babbling... Have fun!

Oh, and I'd be happy to order that extravagant cake for you! Just let me know, and I will set it all up and find a way that they would bill HIM I'm sure it can be done.

I'm sure he's a wonderful man, but some things just can't be taught. Be thankful for that lakefront lot (I sure would be!) and the other things that he does. Cake just probably will never be in his repertoire!

I don't know...Disney has some beautiful cakes. There is an "Official Cake Thread", if you see it you may not ever be happy with a $25 podium cake. There are so many cool decorations, your 5 y.o. will love it. If the budget allows, I'd make it a special cake, maybe with princess decorations.

If it's important to you, then order it yourself. If I had taken that advice myself years ago, I'd have avoided countless arguments with DH when I expected him to be thoughtful and he wasn't.

That said, no way I'd want to eat cake at 8am and I'm not sure you'd find any tables around you willing to share it.

Thanks all for the cake 'support' - you are probably right - I won't be able to give cake away at 8 a.m. LOL.

That said, I think a regular cake would be fine with me, especially at breakfast with DD and when we won't be taking it with us.

Another reason I'm fine with breakfast cake is that I've heard CG has AWESOME desserts that are a little more exotic!

Now if he were to order something special as a surprise for CG.... LOL - oh well - there is always Disney Magic!!! LOL.

That said, somehow I think I WILL get my cake!

Grown women mommies need a day for themselves..especially one that involves cake!

We can't always expect our men to be very detail oriented. And frankly, until I got addicted to the Disboards, I didn't know that I could even order these special things and I've been going to Disney for YEARS!
Definitely check out the cake thread on here for ideas on special stuff and what's good and what to avoid.
Oh, and make sure you mark on your Cali Grill reservation that you are celebrating your birthday.

I'm gonna be there exactly 1 month from my actual birthday (actual july 1, reservation for august 1) and I have my bday listed on the ressie.
I just got over cancer surgery (kidney tumor removal) and I said I'm having a birthday redo! So, we will be at the cali grill and doing it all over! I'll be 39 (again).

And now you are influencing me to order a cake and have it delivered to the table as well!!! (DH can't say I didn't warn him about the birthday redo!)

I agree with PPs that you should give your DH the opportunity to come through for you (i.e., give him the number to call, an idea of what you would like and the timeframe for making cake requests). However, I would make it clear to him that if he is not going to do it, he needs to let you know. If this is the case (and even if it isn't), I don't think you should hesitate to get yourself a fabulous birthday cake! IMHO, it is much, much better to create the birthday that you want for yourself than to be disappointed by the birthday that others created for you.

I wish I could remember the last time I had a B'day cake. I mentioned it last year hubby said oh just pick out whatever you like at Publix. Gee that's orginal. I had wanted to be at Disney for my 40th well it did not happen. So this Jan we are going on the Disney Wonder on the canal cruise. We are staying 4 nights prior to the cruise in 1 bedroom at BCV. I don't know if I want a cake or some fancy Minnie figure and some strawberries

I think you should order your cake

I am celebrating my 40th at WDW and we will have friends there also. I have organised my whole birthday party with my family and friends. Starting with dinner at 1900 Park Fare followed by a Wishes birthday cruise where I am ordering the cake. My birthday won't be a surprise for me but it will be for all of the guests as I'm the only one who knows what we are doing I'm going to give out invitations inviting them to my party.

Disneyfos - YOU are exactly right... and I agree, I think I should do that first before ordering my own. He does show me and step up in other ways though (like surprising me with a lakefront lot for a cottage)

I can't help it though - I just wanna cake. LOL

I hear ya..but I have to believe that he's getting some sort of benefit from the lakefront lot right? Tell him to order the cake, have him involve your daughter to make it a great surprise for Mommy..... All members of the family are equally special and valued..Mommies don't get the shaft on important occasions..bad lesson for daughters to see.

Pick out the cake if you really want something specific..

Too funny! I'm in the same boat. My DH decided that I need to be at Disney World (my favorite place in the world) for my 50th, but there's no way he'd think of ordering a cake since I'm sure he has NO idea you can even do that. I have a wedding and specialty cake business and I still want a birthday cake of my own on the big day. Tell you what, I'll order one for you and you can order mine....

I am so glad to read about some else who has birthday cake issues. My DH is taking me to the World on Sept 3rd for my 50th on Sept 7th. We are having dinner at 1900 Park Fare for my birthday. I REALLY wish he would call GF and order a cake. I don't think I could order my own cake. He knows I LOVE cake and I have been throwing hints. He is a wonderful DH but also a man.

We've been to Disney a couple of times before and I have never ever gotten a cake. Every year secretly hoping that I would finally get a cake. DH is pretty good with details, but, for some reason getting me a cake for my birthday is not on his must list This year we are going for my 40th,sooooooo, I went on the cake thread picked out a cake I liked , chose the decorations and filling, wrote down the number for YC private dining and gave it to DH with specific instructions on when and how to do it. I told him that I would act very surprised !!

As long as it has my name and Happy Birthday on it - I'm all good! LOL!

My dream would be to have a REALLY cool cake - but I wouldn't order that for myself... that whole "egomaniac" avoidance thing... and I really don't think he would ever do it.

I love cakes and learn how to make them do fondant decorating, figures etc have a whole whackadoodle of cake tools - but something says a super cool fondant cakes are only in my future when I make them for someone else.

He's getting off pretty easy this year - as just being at Disney is just the best birthday wish ever (now that I've had my little girl!) I'm paying for the trip in its entirety and just got him the RPDE Rookie Experience for his birthday (obviously to be used when we get there!)

You'd think a $25 cake wouldn't be a problem... and if I pressed it, I'm sure he'd call and arrange it - he's not an ogre... just not 'occasion-minded'. LOL.

Darn it all though - I want a cake... waaahhh! Poor me - I am so deprived. Joking -I feel kinda petty wanting this because in reality - How LUCKY am I! Seriously - very lucky. Very blessed.

$25 cake at Disney? Unless all you want is a 6 inch very small cake, (that you could get at any supermarket for $5.99) you will be spending a LOT more than $25 for a Birthday cake at WDW. Delivery alone will be more than that, sorry to say.
