Oh, the nerve of some people! I went to the store to get my fresh produce today and I bought grapes, bananas, apples and other things. I was so ticked when I checked out! The person BAGGING my groceries was coughing into her hands- almost HACKING into her hands and sniffling and wipping her nose. DIDN'T EVEN WASH HER HANDS and went back to BAGGING MY FRESH PRODUCE...I was so mad! I asked her to please go wash her hands. I asked for another person to bag my things...then I spoke with the store manager. THE NERVE!

I understand that people cannot take off of work for a cold. BUT COME ON, WASH YOUR FRICKEN HANDS BEFORE YOU MAKE EVERYONE ELSE SICK TOO!

That is gross. I wouldn't want my groceries coughed on either.

Although this has nothing to do with cleanliness, one time we were at a super Walmart and purchased groceries. When the girl was ringing the stuff up and handling the food, I noticed she had about 100 sores/moles/whatever. I didn't know what they were, but they were all over her face, hands, and arms. Had I noticed this before we got in line, I would have avoided her line. I'm just anal about food. I didn't get out of line because that would have been very rude, but man did I want to.

I guess people can call me mean if you want, but there was no way for me to know if this was a contagious disease or not. I'm pretty sure it wasn't, or they probably wouldn't have let her work the register and handle food. But you never know!!

The manager got after her, I mean this lady had "3 years of service" listed on her name tag...she should definatly know better!!! all of that food that she bagged and that was sitting in front of her when she had her coughing fit was THOWEN AWAY...about $50 in produce! i got a $20 gift card, but I had to go shop for everything all over again...when I was in a hurry because my Daughter (4 yr. old) had a bad headache (she gets migranes ever since she cracked her head open last Feb)...

I was so angry! I'm still mad about the dumbness of it all. It just ticks me off. People that do that should get fired, I don't care how many years they've worked there. This is a public service that DEALS WITH FOOD, something that is easily contaminated...and this chick is coughing all over my stuff?

An old guy at the gym was hacking all over the machine for 30 minutes....after he was done, he just walks away. I hate people at the gym that can't wipe down their equipment when they are done, but this guy was sick! Please wipe it down dude!!! The next person to approach the machine was unaware.....so I did warn her to wipe it down BEFORE getting on. I felt like a jerk, but in her place I would like a warning so I don't take home the dude's germs.

Yeah, I always wipe things down at the gym before I get on too. It kind of makes me feel better about not getting everyone elses germs. I am not, nor have I ever been a "germ-a-phobe," but man...people are so inconsiderate these days. YUCK!
We're leaving for disney in a month...I don't want to be bringing home everyone elses germs, illnesses and what have you...

just curious as to why you allowed this person to bag your stuff??? Couldn't you have just bagged it yourself???:confused3

She started the coughing a hacking after she started bagging my things...If it was before, believe me I would have bagged my own things. And it didn't help that my 4 year old had a migrane comming on at the time. Does it really matter that it was "the person bagging my groceries?" She could have been "the person ringing my groceries up" it is still horrible...

the fact is that she was an employee of the store who was HACKING into her hands and she was touching fresh produce and other people's groceries with out washing her hands!

I guess I shouldn't mention the fact that most produce has been touched by god knows how many people with who knows what on their hands. The fact you touched the grocery handle and then the food transferred enough to the produce.

I am a very clean person. I bring lysol wipes with me to the grocery store. I hate cart handles. yuck. I know that a lot of people touch produce, grocery items before I even see it. It's the NERVE of this lady that ticks me off. Who in their right mind has the NERVE to stand in front of someone while TOUCHING THEIR FOOD coughing, hacking and such with out excusing themselves to go take care of things. Obviously she was in the wrong, or the manager would not have thrown all of that food away and given me a $20 gift card...

totally agree! Hope you guys don't catch anything from the bagger :headache:

This is why I use the little plastic bags provided in the produce section, as much as it bothers me to use them. It's one less person touching my food. And I wash it when I get home, too.

Now, if I'm geting something at the Deli and somebody has a cold, that's another story...

I bring lysol wipes with me to the grocery store.
Repeat after me: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I'm sorry that the bagger was hacking up a lung while handling your groceries. I am not a germ-o-phobe (but I'm clean! :thumbsup2) and even that might send me over the edge. I hope that your DD feels better :goodvibes.

I understand where you're coming from, and I'd have been grossed out too, but that lady probably didn't want to be there any more than you wanted her there. You have to be near death to get to go home sick when you work in retail. The summer after high school, I worked at Michaels. I was peeing blood and doubled over in pain and tearing up just from trying to stand up and they asked me if I couldn't just work a few more hours before I left. Um, no. I couldn't even drive myself home. My mom came and drove me straight to the ER, I had kidney problems. I had to show them the slip from the ER when I came back to work so that I didn't get written up and/or fired. Retail sucks.

Actually, he probably wouldn't let the poor woman take a sick day, and threw the food away and gave you a gift card so you would calm down and stop making a scene. Don't you use produce bags? I understand the environmental concern, but germs are clearly a big deal to you.

And don't forget what has touched the money you are handling :scared:

All you can really do is wash your hands and everything else when you get home.
Maybe you could have given her a lysol wipe? (j/k)

Yeah well, when I worked in retail and at a restaurant, they wouldn't let us call in sick. Show up or get fired. So I was checking you out and bagging your purchases or handing you a menu and showing you to your table with a head cold. Beleive me, I would have loved to have been at home in bed. Still, I did my best to keep my hands clean and not cough or sneeze on anyone.

If you were making min. wage and had very limited sick time. or if you called in sick to much you might lose your job. You too would be at work sick. There is a limit to the time off people can get for sick time. Don't blame her blame the manager.

I hope you wash your produce when you get it home no matter who handles it.

yep stuff like that bugs me too. I always always go to the self check out lines when there is one available, and sometimes they come over to bag anyway, I always say "no thanks, i can do it" with a smile :)

this happened to me in Target one evening, the check out girl was obviously sick, runny nose, coughing, the whole nine yards, she was sneezing and couging into a tissue that she kept in her hand, while she was ringing all our stuff up........wasn't food, but it still bugged me.
I told her she should at least tell her manager to get her a bottle of purell to have next to the register.:)
