Would you like glass with that? Kroger thought I did! UPDATE! It's sugar!

I was making crescent rolls and grabbed a can of the Kroger brand out of the fridge. As I was wrapping a hot dog in one, I noticed something hard in the dough. Thinking it was a piece of hard dough, I just pulled it out and went on.

I kept finding pieces of hard things and examined one closely - glass!

Being the nut that I am, I tried to pick it all out of this particular triangle of dough so I could still eat them :rotfl:

Unfortunately, the more I made, the more glass I found. Little pieces of shattered glass were distributed throughout all the triangles of dough. :sad2:

Thankfully, I had a can of the name brand on hand, too, so I opened it up and made my crescent dogs.

There is a satisfaction thing on the can - website and phone, plus guarantee it can be brought back to the store. I have the packaging, dough, and lots of glass. I figure I should contact them so they know... what form should I use?

In the meantime, my crescent dogs are fries are beeping at me! YUM!

I'm glad I posted on here as I would have never thought about it being sugar! I stuck a few of the hard pieces in some hot water and it did dissolve. Too bad I lost the tube over it but I'm glad I didn't race up to Kroger and demand to see a manager yet ;)

Thanks!!

Contact the 800 number on the can. They will wan to know the UPC and any other numbers on the can to reflect when it was produced so they can narrow down the batch with problems. If you have a digital camera, I would take pics also.

Oh god. I'd of gone to the store right then (then again I can see Krogers from my house so it's prolly a bit less of a hassle than for most!) and told them they needed to do something right then! How many people didn't notice the glass??

I agree. Absolutely call them right away. Depending on what occurred, they may want to recall that batch. I wonder how many others it was in? :scared1:

Plus you might get a free coupon or two out of it.

Definitely call them, they will probably need to recall the entire batch.

Exactly. Do not go to the store to have the situation resolved. In many cases you can get a store employee who does not see the seriousness of the situation, and will not report to their corp office. I work in the consumer product industry, and we’ve had to do recalls in the past. It is very important to communicate to Kroger’s consumer affairs department. Do not throw away the packaging, as they will ask you questions as to the number printed on it.

I just called - they are only open Monday through Friday and wouldn't even let me leave a msg. I'll go ahead and see if their website has a comment area while I'm at home with all the info on hand.

Ok...so, are you sure that it was really glass? The only reason I am asking is that this has happened to me before (a number of years ago, but I remember it because it was so odd) with a roll of crescent roll dough from Pathmark (in NYC). I had two packages of rolls and noticed it in the first one and opened up the second and it was the same. I just threw it all out (I guess I should have thought more about the ramifications of not reporting it...but I didn't at the time). However, since it happened to you too...I'm wondering if it really was glass or something else?

Ingesting glass like that can be fatal. Definitely call them right away.

Most likely, if you bought them both at the same time, the store received them at the same time and they are probably from the same production lot. I'd imagine if it got into one, it would've gotten into the other.

I'm glad you felt the glass and didn't end up eating any of it :scared1:. Let us know what happens.

We had something similar happen years ago at Disney World of all places. We were there for the Halloween party. The kids got lots of candy. One night I bit into a Milky Way bar ( I think ) and found what I thought was bits of glass. Picked thru the rest of the bar and found many more tiny pieces.

I called the resort manager. ( Didn't know who else to call ) She showed up right away. Checked it out, then left to call someone. She came back about 45 minutes later and said she wanted to try something with me. We got a glass of HOT water and put one of the pieces in it. As she was hoping the piece melted!! Turned out it was crystalized sugar. Which can give the appearance of glass. She wanted to do it with me so there would be no question in my mind.

Then she felt so bad about the whole thing she sent my kids a huge gift basket filled with cookies, milk, rice krispy treats etc. They thought it was great and I was very impressed with how seriously they took everything.

I will try that tonight on a few pieces just to make sure! Thanks for the tip!

Seriously, are you sure it's glass. I've gotten rolls like this also. I called the company & was told they are probably near expiration & that they start to "coagulate" or something (it was a while ago, so I can't remember exactly).

It definitely was not glass & in fact, I've made them & they've been fine. They were almost like tiny, tiny pieces of rock candy.
