Would you lie about your education to get a job?

Absolutely not...it'll never escape you if you lie to get a job.

Fifteen posts from people insisting that they'd never lie on a resume, but hasn't research shown that people do it all the time? I wouldn't lie but only because I'd be terrified I'd be found out, and also I'm pretty happy with my resume.

Honestly I don't think it will matter much for this kid. Two years of menial labor didn't motivate him, so I think he'll probably do a lifetime of menial labor. And the best way to get him a job is probably to appeal to some friend of the family who owns a supermarket or whatever. It's not going to be a resume dump that finds this kid a job.

I'd venture to say that the majority of those polled for research on the topic did not flat out lie about their education, rather, they more than likely fudged (or "enhanced") their prior work history. Technically, it's lying, but not nearly to the level that the OP is talking about.

I agree with you on your second point, though -- it doesn't sound like this person's going to have much luck with or without lying on his resume about graduating HS. At minimum, he needs to work on his work ethic before trying to progress to a more challenging job.
