Would you let your 9 year old go unsupervised ?

I totally agree. Lifeguards are not babysitters. Imagine if everyone left their kids unattended.

I think a 9 YO should be allowed some freedom, and doesn't need their parents leading them around on a leash - however I don't think a water park is an appropriate place for any child to be left unsupervised.

When I was 9, I went places with my 11 yo brother. We never went far, however I my mom and dad never let us swim alone (even with lifeguards)

Oh well, to each his own. Kids here ride the city bus and subways alone, so having a 9 year old stay in one area of a park alone isn't a big deal to me.

I know my son will not walk away with someone he doesn't know. Heck, if he sees me speaking to someone he doesn't know, he'll ask if I know them.

I just can not believe a 9 year old will leave a park with a stranger. I don't see how someone can take a child (9 or over) out of a park without causing a scene.

On our next trip my son will be 11(he turns 12 during the trip) I will him allow to explore some areas of the parks on his own.

Last summer I took him and a few of his friends to an a theme park in Long Island. As soon as I gave them their bands for the rides, they took off. They knew what time to meet me at the arcade, and they checked in with me from time to time. We're going to do the same thing next month.

Disneyjunkie-

Luckily no one has reported you to CPS. Don't you watch the news/listen to the radio/read the newspaper? Abductors take children quickly--didn't you see the incident of a child being molested in Wal-mart (or maybe it was Target) last week. NO ONE saw anything or heard anything! I feel for your child and pray nothing happens to them. You can see the majority of people don't follow your beliefs...if you think your child is fine and safe that great... I wish I lived on the same planet you do!

Things happen in church, schools, stores, homes, front yards, parks and you think theme parks are safe. Did you read any of the other posts from people around here! It doens't matter where you live these things happen...I live in a small town in the mid-west...I still wouldn't let my kids do any of the things you talk about---just plain ignorant to do that in these times.

I am not sorry for my view and expressing it...it is apparent we totally disagree on this subject. Like I said I wish I lived where you did and felt my children were safe on there own in theme parks!

I think we've gone from discussing to pointing fingers. The question hs been answered and now it will be locked.
