i have a potential candidate for a position at my sign shop. he has all the skills and plenty of years in the industry. Only thing is he does not have a driving license, and has not had one for 20 yrs due to a dui.....He said his 1st priority is to obtain a nj license once he moves here....I need someone with one for installs. the job requires one. I am thinking of telling him to come back when he has his license....what do you think? oh and he told us that noone got hurt 20 yrs ago, but 20 yrs is a long time without a license..... sounds fishy...

IF he fits every where else but you need someone to drive to installs (unless you have another person that would be working with him and driving) then he would need to come back when he had a valid drs license.

If he lived in say, NYC, I can see living there without a license but 20 years is a long time without a license. Do you do background checks on your employees? I would make sure you did one on him from every state he lived in.

I wouldn't hire him without him having a driver's license, especially since you need someone with one for the installs.

I wouldn't. Especially if they needed to drive for the job. Plus 20 years for a DUI. A guy I work with had THREE DWI's before he even lost his license for 1 year!!

Like someone else said, if he lived in NYC he just may have not needed one, and so didn't get it. You need more details.

If you are really interested in the candidate, I'd do a background check and see what pops up.

A friend lost his license for 20 years! His offense was drag racing...

Mikeeee

Just wanted to throw in, OP never said he lost the license for 20 years, just that the guy's been without one for 20 years. He could have had it suspended for 6 months or something for all we know. With that said, if he needs to drive for the job, no way would I hire someone without a license (for obvious reasons lol).

Well if you need someone to drive for the job obviously I would pass over him, no matter what the reasons are.

If the job requires a valid license, then he doesn't qualify. Tell him he can reapply when he has one.

I was told by one HR person that unless the position specifically involves driving, it is against the law to not hire someone because they don't drive. In fact, she told me we couldn't even ask that question during interviews.

Here is something I found in New York State laws - http://www.cs.state.ny.us/pio/interviewguide/questions.cfm

That only applies when driving isn't part of the employee's duties. When driving is part of the job the employer is required to obtain proof of a valid driver's license.

I think that's what he said ;)

Hey, give him a drug test too!

::yes::

A friend here in NYC is taking her first ever road test for a license. She's 31. She's moving to L.A. and she's never needed to know haow to drive before this.

That being said, since this particular job requires him driving, you may want to hire somebody with more driving experience and really knows the roads he will be driving on. You don't want somebody who doesn't know his way around BY CAR. He could lose a lot of time on the job because he doesn't know the best & quickest routes to take.

In Florida and Virginia (where I used to live) a person can get a state-issued ID card. Basically it wil have the same information as a licence, including the photo, name address and birth date, but will not give driving privledges.

For example, to get a handicap hang tag for a car you have to have the State ID card or a Driver's License. It is useful for other things where an official identification is required.

Unless a person has an offical ID card of some sort, or a passport, to show they are who they claim to be I would not hire them. Of course if the position requires any driving they would have to have a current valid DL.

Since the job requires a license to drive I would not hire him.

It would be like hiring someone to drive a school bus and hope they get a license before the first day of school;)
